Lennon vs Walcott: Who’s the dog’s?

May 27, 2006

As Sven blooded the two youngest members of his World Cup squad against Belarus, there was little doubt that it was Aaron Lennon’s Man of the Match performance that made people sit up and take notice. However, Walcott did show flashes the pace and flair that most fans were seeing for the first time, Sven included and at least did not look out of his depth against…erm…Belarus.

Lennon obviously has had a season of fine form to build from while all Walcott has enjoyed is enormous pressure, but it would have been nothing compared to what Theo will face when he comes on at the World Cup - with a Rooneyless nation expecting miracles from their new teen superstar.

So how should Sven manage his two wild cards? Has Lennon done enough to start? Will Walcott even play? If England are chasing a match with 20 minutes to go, who would you bring on - Wenger’s prodigy or Jol’s main man?

Lennon shat all over Walcott, showed just as much pace, and looked untacklable.

Lennon allowed himself to get marked out the game after 15 minutes. Colour me unimpressed.

    Fowler!
Theres no one in england as lethal in front of goal as Fowler!

What a mistake from Svennis! (I’m a Swede:)
Or… maybe he doesnt want Fowler to ruin the strike against Sweden since 1968?

Marked out of the game after 15 minutes? He got their left back sent off single handedly in the second half.

Let Walcott have a few games, he got more brain, he’s a better technical player, got a great first touch, and sure is faster than the lemon.
He’ll score at the WC, and by next season will put the lemon in his pocket.

I’m a lifelong gooner and I fucking hate spurs with every atom in my body. But I have to admit… Lennon fucking ROCKS. We haven’t seen much of Walcott but Wal has a lot to live up to to get to Lennon’s level. First time I saw him play for spurs thought he was amazing. :[

I’m a rank gooner, but i cannot fail to be impressed by lennon. my allegiance does not blind me to class. lennon has it in abundance, or so it would seem. time will tell on this, i think he will not disappoint.

however, talk or lennon vs walcott, is hardly fair. lennon has featured for spurs much this term, theo has not for the arse, as wel all know.

watching the game on weds, theo had nothing to feed on - i am not making excuses for the lad, i do not need to, the opportunities he had to show his game were exceedingly limited, and the two moments he had showed good promise. but when defoe came on, the balls seemed to go to him the whole time, theo was left on the periphery of things.

let us not talk of one against the other, instead let us speak of how to utilise them both to the miximum advantage of england, and formulate a plan whereby they are both given the chance to display their respective talents to the fore.

Lennon looked handy on the ball, but had no final product - pretty, but essentially not that useful against Belarus.

Walcott didn’t have that long on the pitch, but looked dangerous when he had the ball - really didn’t get involved enough though…

Both looked ok, but even as a gooner I don’t think Theo or Lennon is ready for the full first team…

    what i dont understand is

Harewood offers more to the England team than Walcott or Defoe, this season Harewood got 16goals, including goals vs Chelsea, Man Utd and in the FA Cup semi final… so he can hack the pressure… he also has amazing strength along with pace to match the likes of Defoe… what has Walcott done? And also what has Jermaine Defoe done?

Downing may have more potential but on this season s form Etherington has been much better!!

Ashton offers more than Crouch.i.e he may be shorter but he is better on the air and on the floor, with better finishing!!

Ferdinand is miles better than Dawson and dont get me started on Reo Coker and Jenas!!

well at the moment its tottenham and

    Defoe,
    Jenas,
    Carrick,
    Dawson,
    Lennon,

    all i am suggesting is

    Harewood better than Defoe
    Ashton better than Crouch
    Reo Coker better than Jenas
    Ferdinand better than Dawson
    Etherington better than Downing

and for youre comment “why not westham instead of england for e world cup?”

it already is the academy isnt it? Carrick, Cole, Defoe, Lampard, Ferdinand, Richardson, Terry, G.Johnson

and i have watched west ham for years we are better now than when we had Lampard, cole Ferdinand etc.. and that is mainly down to the 5 players names i have put forward

Harewood wont offer more than Walcott. Walcott’s skill and pace will burn defenders. against beloreus, he got sandwiched but if he’d got through he would have scored. Lennon is class. next game Walcott should get 90minutes instead. He’ll probably score.

I don’t want to pop your bubble, but the so called class of West Ham and Spurs, led to us losing to Belarus. You’re all raving about your superstars, but the bottom line is they are run of the mill premiership players and regrettably no world beaters. Campbell has to play alongside Terry and unless Shrek is fit we can’t win the World Cup, when Owen breaks down as he always does we will be left with a couple of unproven strikers its a shocking state of affairs what is Sven doing not taking any strikers, and how the hell is Beckham still in the team. I reckon Sven taken a bung from the Swedes!!

Though Lenon will make a usful addition the crux of the problem is how is Sven going to turn the team into a cohesive unit. I can forsee this being difficult wif Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard and the likes all startin.

theo have only 17age old but he is the new Pele HENRY
i think Theo is better then Lenon. For me i dont wory sor Theo and Lenon But dor england team

i agree a lot of the choices for svens squad puzzled me a bit. Im glad lennon got in, because he has had a very good season. Walcott could go either way. I think potentially he could have a big impact and maybe get a couple of goals, but i worry about whether he can handle it all mentally and physically. He wouldnt be able to start games, he wouldnt be able to cope physically with playing 60/70 minutes at the top level, having only played a handful of reserve games in the past 6 months.

As for the west ham fan - i agree all of those players have had good seasons, and have put themselves there or there abouts when it comes to the englandsquad, but it would be too much i feel to take too many players unproven for england, as we already have 3 in downing lennon and walcott. I do feel that all the players will win caps for england beforeeuro 2008, and some may even be in the squad for it too.

As for the person who says we cant win it without rooney - i thnk we still have a good chance. And how can you say owen will break down as he always does? owen isnt a particularly injury prone player. As for the Beckham haters, at the beggining of the season i would have agreed with you, but beckham has had his best season in madrid this season, and has been one of their players.

I would play this as our starting line up:
    Robinson

    Neville Ferdinand Terry A.Cole

    Carrick
    Beckham Gerrard Lampard J.Cole

    Owen

Carrick sitting deep protecting the back four, this allows j.cole, lampard and especially gerrard to bomd forward and support owen. Gerrard is wasted as a defensive player as sven alwawys uses him, cos he is probably the best attacking midfielder in england, possibly europe. Having a holding player like that is key, all the top teams use one - France (makelele), Brazil(Gilberto) Argentina (mascherano), Italy (Gattuso) etc etc

When the golden boy gets back, its a tough decision who to drop though, would depend on how everyone was performing.
Whatever happens, england are gonna win it!! WOOOOHOOooooOOO!!!

Let’s remember that theo’s only 17 and Aaron is 19, Walcott still did some impressive stuff out there. Try to imagine Aaron Lennon being picked for the euro 2004 finals, or even what Lennon would have done last night at walcotts age. Lennon only just made it into the squad despite having a two-year head start on Walcott.

You people need to get your tongues out of Lennon’s arse- yes, he’s obviously got some skill, but the guy didn’t actually do anything useful all night. Looks talented, but a player who can’t pass, cross or shoot is precious little use

Sine watching england from when sven has taken over i have always felt that the swede has never had a plan b (losing against a ten man brazil in the last world cup only proves my point) I have always felt that with an injury to rooney sven will be clueless with who to choose. Now i have seen theo and lennon both play at there respective old clubs live (southampton and leeds) and always felt that both of them will go on to be the future of england, but at this moment in time it still amazes me that the 2 top english goal scorers darren bent and marlon harewood have not been chosen. Now both are good strickers but i feel they will never be world beaters (and im a west ham fan but i say what is true) but how both of these players are not even on stanby is beyond me, we have picked theo who hasnt played a prem match, aj who is in the championship and peter the donkey crouch (its like seein emile all over again) but surely sven must pick the inform players of the year and lets be fair neither are wayne rooney but surely thats logic!! Anyway whoever sven chooses i just hope he can prove me wrong and win the cup in his last year… COME ON THE ENGLAND!!

  25. on May 28th, 2006 8:44 am

Walcott all the way, the little Yidi Lennon is just a show pony who looked ok against…wait for it Belarus. I remember a similar players that Arsenal let go last summer, remeber Pennant anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. on May 28th, 2006 9:01 am

I think there’s more chance of Sven converting to Islam than dropping Beckham for Lennon, no matter how good the boy is.

    on May 28th, 2006 11:04 am

Lennon no end product? Set up Crouch’s goal with a fine ball even though the giraffe was offside, also had a neat backheel

  28. on May 28th, 2006 1:18 pm

Before anyone sounds off about WHU, remeber, we won the world cup for England in 66.
Moore, Captain, Player of the tournament.
    Peters, goalscorer in the final.
Hurst the only player ever to score a hat trick in a wc final. Beat that.
We have also supplied, Lampard, Cole, Carrick for this wc and we ain’t got the millions like other clubs have.
If your a good young player, don’t go to one of the top 4 where you wont get a game, come to the famous academy of football at West Ham.
At the top 4, you stand little chance of getting into the team because you are English.

  29. on May 28th, 2006 1:29 pm

How many strikers are we taking to the World Cup????
Besides injuries, nobody seems to have thought about cover for forwards who miss games due to two yellows or a red. Remember Beckham? Who would have thought that he would miss games due to a sending off?
Consider this - Owen, Rooney do not pass fitness test. Also,Crouch gets sent off.
Are we really going to play Walcot upfront on his own?

    1. defoe is a product of Charlton

2.WHU were so lame the players jumped ship, even with all the talent you had.

stop living in the past, talkin about 1960, hello it’s been 40 years now. All ‘your’ players have thrived in their new teams, not wasting their talent in a mid-table team thats full of spud rejects…
