Who should have gotten AJ?

May 29, 2006

They call him the Beckham of the south…well…actually that doesn’t seem right at all. But anyway, Andrew Johnson looks set to join Everton for a mere 8.5m pounds after a three way transfer battle with Bolton and Wigan. After netting 21 goals two seasons ago as Palace were relegated, he then bagged another 15 this year as they failed to go straight back up.

If he manages to avoid being the next Michael Ricketts/Kevin Philips/David Beckham, his pace, constant running and sharp finishing should prove to be great foil for James Beattie (or as a lone striker, should Beatts prove too fat to play again) as Everton look to build on the form from the tail end of last season. If Arteta and Cahill can continue to develop, the Blues could be looking at another run at the top six.

However, the most interesting part of any transfer is rarely the opinions of the team that got him - but rather those who didn’t. So, who the heck wanted AJ? Wigan and Bolton obviously as Jewell continues to search for someone to take JJB-earned cash, and Allardyce tries to put the hilarious embarassment of not being named England manager behind him.

But who else could’ve used the Beckham of the south? Could Tottenham have snapped him up and shipped out Defoe? Would he have worked wonders up front for Liverpool, partnering Peter Crouch in some kind of least-exciting front line ever? Maybe Manchester United were in with a shout to replace Van Nistlerooy and signal once and for all that Fergie has lost his mind?

I think he is good enough to play for Liverpool and think he’s quite an exciting player - the frequency of goals he scores ensures this.

There is no Judge like the judgement of History! It could be that Everton (and their much internally maligned “luvvy” Bill Kenwright) have pulled off an almighty coup in getting AJ. As an Evertonian, I truly hope so. 15 to 20 goals extra per season would probably put Everton back into a position of competing for Europe every season. On that basis, £8.5 mil? good investment. BUT being an Evertonian, we don’t count our chickens, or brag to the sky. I just hope we become a more entertaining team again for our fellow supporters of other clubs who come to watch us. Good luck AJ. We’re waiting for you!

Johnson isnt remotely good enough for Liverpool, he scored less than Jerome last season who’s just moved for £3 million. Says it all.

£8.5M is surely too much?? Think PFC will have to settle for lower league striker then!. Why would Johnson want to play alongside the ’smirking scummer’anyway?

The pace of A.J. linked with the vision of Our’Tata looks exciting - that is until we train it out of him at Bellfield. If we get Huth ( meaning we lose Joey ) and can keep hold of cahill …..mind you it wouldnt be Everton if everything went to plan would it ? Im expecting A.J. to be called up for the World Cup,win the golden boot and sign for Deep Pockets down south for a £30 million profit !

Its all about class guys.. basically players like dirk kyut, RVN, Thiery Henry is class A players… then there are class B players.. James Beattie, Paul Dickov and u guessed it AJ.

LFC will never go for 2dn best players.. the team is too good for it.. so we leave it for them second tier teams to be happy with what they can get :)

    on May 29th, 2006 7:55 pm

Hmmm…class B - I think Crouch fits perfectly into that lot, along with Heskey.

Fowler, Morientes, Garcia and Crouch are all B list players if not c list, fuck off Liverpool. Moyes is building the pride of mersyside. Without Stevie G the reds is a joke!!!

Is he worth £8.5m? Probably not. Is a litre of petrol worth 95p? Is it fuck, you’ve still got to pay it if you want it bad enough though. Andy Johnson is exactly what we need & after Wigan & Bolton had offers accepted there was no way we were getting him any cheaper. Sometimes you have to dig deep to get the quality you need, this is definately 1 of those times, a few goals at the right time could have made a massive to us last season & hopefully AJ will give us those next season.

8 1/2 Million for Jonnson? I thought we got ripped for Deano, but that makes him sound like a bargain. (And he’s not off to Scouseland coz he drives a nice car & likes the hubcaps where they are)

    Muahah, you thick beaut.

How can you say that when you play / played Crouch, Morientes, Litmanen, Friedel, Fowler to name but a few.

How is the weather down south?

Great signing. Will give our midfield more space to work in now that the defences will be on thier toes because of AJs pace.

Still laughing at this signing. £8.5 million is outstanding LOL. An average striker, from an average Championship side and you lot go and pay that for him. No wonder you’ve won nothing for over a decade. Come back and knock Fowler and Crouch when you have 18 League Titles and 5 European Cups. Der der der der, der der der der.

i support pompey and we were linked with AJ in the summer but Harry didnt want 2 spend 8million but i wish he had cos AJ is one of them precious few strikers who usually gets more than 15 a season if he is injured

Got something to say?
