Gordon: Newcastle a shining example of ‘Big Club’ syndrome

Another reader submission for ‘From The Terraces‘ today, as Gordon continues a trend this summer and takes a swipe at Newcastle…good luck with that.

As a reader of this site, I’ve already noticed that Newcastle’s aspirations to be recognized as a ‘Big Club‘ have already come under fire and the problem has only gotten worse by their antics this summer. Bring on Glenn Roeder as full time manager? Champions League here they come. Sign Duff for a decent fee? Newcastle must be bigger than Real Madrid.

The latest bit of misplaced arrogance stemmed from the Dirk Kuyt saga, first come the Kuyt’s “quotes” from the Daily Star,

“I would consider a move to Liverpool, but my first choice is Newcastle,” Kuyt is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

“I know quite a bit about Newcastle, they’re one of the best supported teams in the Premier League and a typical English club.”

Cue mass hysteria amongst the Geordies about what a massive club they are.

But after the Dutchman, for some unfathomable reason, decided to sign for the recent European champions and FA cup winners rather than a trophyless club that happens to have a big stadium. Of course, Roeder rolled out the kinds of quotes we’re more used to seeing after Tottenham’s ‘almost’ transfer signings,

“I think what I have to say first of all is I never bid for him,” Roeder told Sky Sports News.

“If anyone was to suggest he turned us down that would be completely wrong. You can only be turned down if you make a bid.”

Little defensive, are we? Sounds more like Roeder was believing his own hype or watched Goal! one time too many. Newcastle are the new Leeds and Kuyt would never have joined you over Pool had you decided to bid, so please get over it and yourselves and get back to cheering for Ameobi as he leads you out on the weekend.
