Ah Stewart Downing, a prime example of how we just love to hate people and things just for the sake of it.
He’s currently a whipping boy for many through no fault of his own. He’s played very well for Middlesbrough, got into the England squad on merit and looks to have a long career ahead of him. Yet, thanks to rumored interest from everyone from Manchester United to Liverpool, and confirmed – laughed at – bid from Tottenham, supporters across the Premiership harp on about how overrated the poor lad is.
“Poor man’s Beckham!”, “Can’t beat a man!”, “Terribly unattractive!” they cry. Even his own club’s official website came out and threw the poor fellow to the sharks by making a public case for him versus Aaron Lennon.
He’s a good player but by now there are many consider him overrated that he’s probably underrated now. And thanks to teamate Andrew Davies, it’s about to get worse…
“It is very unfair. Somebody gave him some of the stats for the games he has played for England and they showed over the last few games, his pass rate was in the nineties (90+%) and his crossing was good.
“I just do not understand why your own country and your own fans and the press would want to get on the back of a player who is doing well.
“He is only 22 – in the next five years, you could so easily see him being the next Ryan Giggs.”
Who exactly Davies thinks can easily see Downing being the next Ryan Giggs is unclear, but if you want the press and England support to get off the back of your mate you probably shouldn’t start comparing him to arguably one of the Premiership’s, and football’s, best ever wingers.
