What Good Is A Five Year Plan?
October 10, 2006
Boggs is sick of waiting.
The infamous Five Year Plan.
So heralded by wide eyed optimists upon the arrival of a new manager, so criticised by those unwilling to waste away more of their life for a false dawn. Tottenham and Newcastle supporters more than anyone else in recent times have been force fed the notion that patience is the key to Premiership success. Already, Martin Jol has accepted that it will be another few seasons before the London club is ready to challenge at the top.
A Five Year Plan is great in theory, give a manager time to build “his squad” and install his tactics and football personality on his team. Be patient and stick with him through the thick and thin so that he can develop a team without worrying about being sacked in a week. David Moyes at Everton is the shining example.
But really, patience is for fools. Football is a fickle sport with an established elite and opportunities to make an true and lasting impact are few and far between. Tottenham are a perfect example, sure they made tremendous progress last season by almost claiming that fourth Champions League spot. But last season Spurs had the rarest of opportunities to catch Arsene Wenger’s side in transition, steal the last Champions League spot and in the process deal a huge blow to a club paying off a new stadium and almost certainly sealing the departure of Thierry Henry. We bottled it, and now my life is a little less happy.
The opportunity to spark such a chain of events may not arise again for a long, long time. Tottenham’s best Premiership season also saw them lose their best chance to flip the balance of power in North London. No matter what is achieved in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th year it is unlikely to make as much of a difference as what finishing 4th in the 2nd would have. .. err… or something.
Anyway, taking your sweet time to make progress takes its toll on your playing squad as well. Tottenham have a promising and talented group of players but Michael Carrick already buggered off to Manchester United to help his career. Given Tottenham’s poor start this season, if they fail to qualify for the Champions League or even the UEFA cup will they be able to continue to hold onto the likes of Ledley King or Aaron Lennon? How about the year after that?
The Premiership itself is in a sort of transition, Liverpool and Arsenal are not where they “should be” and if Tottenham don’t take advantage now, in two years time when they’re finally “ready” the established Big Four will likely be back to their best. And at that point, it won’t even matter.

PS I could buy you, bitch.
Stupid fanboy.
Please go support Chelsea like all your kind.
i dont think how some people hope to achieve success within overnight. spurs is a small club today it was a big club 20yrs ago but not now and if they are hoping to become a big club it takes time to get it right cos we are not manutd or arse to buy best players and managers and it will take time so shut the fuck up with ur complaints and if u dont support spurs when they are actually on the up now, ur a not a fuckin fan to begin with, just some rotten loser who finds ways to complain in order to forget about his shitty life
we are not manutd or arse to buy best players and managers
The Arsenal does not buy the best players. They are made into the best players there. That takes bit of football acumen. And a great amount of patience. Wenger won a double in his first full season, and then nothing for the next three. But he did build a great second side in the meantime, and it did take five years to win the second title.
but a big club can afford to buy flops and still have no complaints from the fans eg Jeffers 10M pounds while Spurs have just recently recovered from the buy of REbrov even though in my eyes he was ok just that hoddle didnt like him for some reason but the truth is ever since then spurs fans have been scared to buy big players eg berbatov and zokora while arsenal dont really care maybe now cos of a stadium and how about the G14
The thing is though, the only team that’s ‘broken through’ in one season, is Chelsea, and unless you can find us a rich and bored multi-billionaire, it WILL take time to improve the team. People talk about Wenger winning the double in his first season, but he already had a half-decent side in there.
Also, people go on about how we shouldn’t have sold Carrick. In the end, he wanted to leave - we’ve seen the effects of keeping a player that doesn’t want to be at the club, it brings the other players down, and you don’t get the sort of performances that you would from a player that wants to stay at the club. I think that this effect is only increased when it’s on of your most influential players.
We’re not playing well at the moment, but it’s frustrating to see so many Spurs fans living up to the ‘fickle’ label that we hear so much. ‘Jol out!!’, from the same people that were cheering him on and wanting his babies last season! Football is a swiftly-moving sport, but that is simply ridiculous! We finally have a manager who seems to be doing something with the team, and a number of the fans seem dissatisfied unless we’re winning the league, league cup and FA cup, not to mention the champions league, all in one season! An exaggeration, yes, but that’s sometimes how it feels!
What good is a five-year plan? Without huge sums of money, time, and shrewd investment is the ONLY way to break into the top 4.
Yep, you’re right - we need to sack everyone now and go back to square 1.
God I hate (my fellow) Spurs fans sometimes!
through ups and downs just support spurs…..end of.

Few harsh replies there, i believe you have what most fans have and that is plain frustration. Its easy for arsenal fans to have a dig, they do have a great side and manager, so most things are rosy. But if you look back to the 80’s they were no where to be seen as with chelsea, now with any decent success will generate money which is needed to compete,so if Jol can bring it to spurs in any form of europe its the stepping stone to the next level.Arsenal, manure and chelsea all came good at the perfect time, with cl money by the bucket load its seen them grow and grow, and fair play to them,if you get success it is always earned. Now its time for spurs to earn theres, but the question is, will Matin Jol be the man to do that, and can the team you have achieve that?
If you look at everton 2 seasons ago, they were well above expectations to reach 4th but no football fan can deny they deserved it,if they had reached the group stages, money would have come by the bucket load and there the club take that next step, but failing tactics and lack of experience saw them fail in both european competitions. As for spurs, they needed 4th for that opportunity but fell at the last hurdle. To be a big club,to compete, you need cl and all that comes with it,so any manager who takes there club to the group stages of that cl will also bring success and build a bigger club.Newcastle are the only team i know who fell from grace after hitting those levels, but every year in the summer they can spend 10’s of millions on players, where that money comes from is partly from the bucket loads they earnt on their euro adventures, but if they dont reach them heights in the next few years you will find that money becomes less and less. Its either HARD WORK - CL = SUCCESS or BIG INVESTOR - BUY A GREAT TEAM WITH WORLD CLASS PLAYERS = SUCCESS.

Yo inbred gobshites.
Don\’t remember saying anywhere that I didn\’t support Spurs or Jol, just that the notion of a Five Year Plan as an excuse for poor form in year 3 is nonsense.
We have the players to challenge for a Champions League spot right now, sure a couple of them are injured but everybody has injuries.
The Premiership is in a slight transitional period as the smaller teams are getting a lot of joy against the traditional \”Big Clubs\” and if Tottenham don\’t take advantage now it will be a huge loss, because who knows if the elite will have been firmly restored by year 5.
I probably should\’ve written that in the article, but it was late…
I think the people who bang on about others being fickle just cause they don’t publicly worship everything Jol does are far worse than any “fickle supporter”. The author here doesnt even complain about Jol he’s merely talking about all the opportunities missed as a result of waiting on a 5 year plan. By the time you guys are ready to compete, Benitez will have sorted out Liverpool and Wenger’s Arsenal kids will have matured
Now is your best chance
A 5 year plan is a great idea if you aren’t pummeling investments into the Club. At the moment, Spurs have invested a lot in the team and if they can consolidate themselves as a top 6 Club over the next two or three seasons that investment will have been paid off by european appearances etc.
I’m not sure it is fair to compare any Club or team to Arsenal because we are incredibly lucky to have a manager with an uncanny nose for a bargain. There are very few manegrs in the world who could pick players out the way Wenger does.
I hate to admit it as a Gooner, but Spurs seem to be heading in the right direction and their early season form is likely to be just a blip with a strong push for another European place likely this season.
As for the Northern idiot, maybe you should comment after Liverpool have won the Premiership? The trophy has resided in the capital for three years and is unlikely to budge this May either.

You’re an idiot - it is amazing that we are still picking up quality young players since we lost him. When did I mention the Champions League final loss? Your post is totally random and incoherent.

Glad you can understand us at least, i can’t understand a word the scousers say, Irish mixed up with some kind of fucked up northern slurry!
Comolli is now working for Spurs, but he had not been working for Arsene for years. If I were you, I would be worried by the fact that prior to work for Spur he was helping Gerrard Houillier recruiting for Liverpool !!!
Henry had been discovered by Arsene Wenger as a young boy when AW was at Monaco.
Kolo Toure, Emanuel Eboue were part of the Ivorian Football academy of Marc Guillou.
Philip Senderos and Johan Djourou were recruited because of the connection with Marc Roger and his connection with Servette.
Comolli has much less influence than people think. He is a good adminitrative guy, but in term of judging the player, Arsene Wenger is the one who knows.
Having a 5 years plan is still better than having no plan as some other teams have : Charlton, Hammers, Fulham, …
Yes, it is now becoming more and more difficult, but one advantage that Spur has is that as a London club it is easier to attract 25-30 years good quality players. For the same amount of money and chance of success, few foreign fancy going to Newcastle or up north.
