Lampard Needs Team Built Around Him

Franky Lamps continues to pop up with more and more quotes in the media. Ahead of England v Croatia, the Chelsea midfielder reveals that the reason why he can’t get in the goals more for England is that the midfield is not designed to allow him to do so,

“If you play with two of those holding type players in there it would give me more freedom to get forward.

“If you play with one, there will be more responsibility to be involved in the midfield and maybe try to get a grip of the game rather than get in the box so often.

Makes sense, Essien and Makelele usually form the defensive wall from which Lampard can operate at Chelsea and is the reason he has been able to set such ridiculous standards for himself in the Premiership in terms of goals from midfield. When he plays with a single partner for England, it’s understandable that he refrains from bombing into the box at every opportunity.

With Boggs’ predicting that Steve McClaren will roll out 3-5-2 to spite those who say he won’t, Lampard will have his chance to send the perfect message on his 50th cap against Croatia.

If he doesn’t? Well…best not to think about that really.
