Normally we would assume someone wasn’t being literal with a quote like this, but we’re talking about David Beckham here,
“I would walk back from the United States to play for England again,” he told Sport magazine.
“I am sure if I am doing well over there, it will not go unnoticed.
“I will always be available to play for my country if I am needed. I am a fit person and a fit player. Getting a recall is not my decision is it?
“If it does happen, then amazing. But, if it doesn’t, then I am honoured to have played the games I have played, and to have captained my country so many times.”
While Preston North End striker and Everton target David Nugent may not be hindered by playing in the Championship, it’ll be interesting to see if the former Manchester United winger is held back by not even playing in any major football league let alone the Premiership. Steve McClaren has tried to be the Best England Boss Ever ™ and acting as though he doesn’t hold the same prejudices or biases as his predecessors, but we have our doubts.
So will knocking a 50 yard through ball past defenders who don’t understand the “Ah-ffside rule” count just as much? Will a pinpoint cross to the head of a striker, only for him to catch it and try to shoot it like a basketball, still impress Steve McClaren?
Only time will tell…but no, it won’t.
