The world of Premiership transfer rumours is full of nonsense, but some nonsense is more interesting that the other nonsense. Speculation is rife in the likes of the Mirror, Daily Mail, Times, Sun and… err… Tribal Football all do their best to predict and/or completely make up the future.
Here’s our opinion on the rumours we’ve read in the papers and around the net… and if you have any thoughts, pop em in the comments.
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to sign a five-year £28m contract and remain with Manchester United.
CaughtOffside Says: If pay was the ultimate indicator of performance or value, then this deal would mean Ronaldo is almost 10 times less valuable than David Beckham. And yes, we know about those kids in Asia.
However, it is reported Real Madrid are ready to step in following the rejection of Ronaldo’s £140,000 a week wage demands at Old Trafford.
CaughtOffside Says: Always nice when two rumours conflict with each other, but we still think Ronaldo knows better than to jump to a struggling ship just yet. Wait until Scholes and Giggs start to lose it, then make the switch to La Liga to avoid waiting for John O’Shea to play a through ball.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says he will not stand in the way of John Terry and Frank Lampard if they decide to play overseas.
CaughtOffside Says: That would probably be because he’d be leaving Chelsea at that point to and would be the one brokering the deal for his new club.
Spanish giants Barcelona are preparing a £16m bid for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso in the summer.
CaughtOffside Says: This rumour came up a while ago, and the argument stands. If David Nugent’s boyhood support for Everton is enough to make him join them over all else, then Xabi’s affection for Pep Guardiola and Barcelona might factor in here as well. He’s had a good run in England, but hardly established the kind of ties or reputation that means he would turn down a place at the Nou Camp.
Fulham are considering signing Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia for next season.
CaughtOffside Says: Not sure what happened at Fulham, but for a few years they trotted out the same journeyman players as anyone else – but this past season have really done some good work in the transfer window. Montella, Dempsey, Michael Brown have all shown up and done quite well. Hyypia would add some more experience and leadership even if his pace leaves him virtually rooted to the ground at this point.
Reading boss Steve Coppell is close to signing defender Andre Bikey on a permanent basis.
CaughtOffside Says: Not a bad move actually, bit of pace hasn’t hurt so far. And if he ever scores an own goal or does something embarassing, there’s a ready-made headline.
