Tottenham And Chelsea Target Trio

There’s an old Eskimo saying, “Premiership teams like target players in groups of three”, and Chelsea and Tottenham are proving no different.

The Sunday Mirror, in all its reliable glory, has claimed that Martin Jol is targeting Morten Gamst Pedersen, Gareth Bale and Darren Bent as his priority signings this summer, with Mido, Hossam Ghaly and Jermain Defoe heading out the door. Hardly rocket science, more a paper just putting together old rumours, but we’re not convinced Defoe’s time is up yet. Martin Jol has been making plenty of noises to the contrary and seems like an honest bloke – if Jermainsy leaves White Hart Lane it will only be because he wanted to.

Chelsea have had confirmation of three targets come straight from Jose Mourinho, only with no names,

“Our squad is obvious and it’s easy to understand that we need a central defender, we need another midfield player, especially because we will lose Michael Essien and Mikel [John Obi] for the African Nations Cup, and we need a striker because we will lose Didier and Salomon [Kalou],” said Mourinho.

“So if we don’t get injuries and if we get three new players to give a good balance to the team I think we are in a good position.

“We don’t need to spend money on big transfers, we can do it calmly, wisely, and we can do a good job and keep the money in the bank.”

If Reading’s Steve Sidwell becomes that midfielder cover then there’s two spots left. Names like Eto’o and Ledley King have been thrown around the net but if Jose and Chelsea are really trying to simply add affordable squad cover – as with Sidwell – then there might be a few surprises yet this summer.
