The world of Premiership transfer gossip is full of nonsense, but some nonsense is more interesting that the other nonsense. Speculation is rife in the likes of the Mirror, Daily Mail, Times, Sun and… err… Tribal Football all do their best to predict and/or completely make up the future.
Here’s our opinion on the Premiership transfer rumours we’ve read in the papers and around the net… and if you have any thoughts, pop em in the comments.
West Ham are planning a summer swoop for Fulham keeper Niemi.
CaughtOffside Says:And the spending begins, there’s almost no doubt that the Hammers will be much stronger next season and starting with the underrated Niemi isn’t a bad idea. Robert Green and Roy Carroll have both been good in patches, but lacked consistency. And Carroll is a mentalist.
Sunderland are set to bring midfielder Gavin McCann back to the club from Aston Villa.
CaughtOffside Says: Roy Keane should know how to build a good squad, he learned from the best, and a midfield anchor like McCann will bring experience and consistency. But Martin O’Neill isn’t likely to let him go unless Lerner’s millions bring in one or two big names.
Birmingham want to sign Liverpool keeper Scott Carson.
CaughtOffside Says: More English keepers going out on loan, Reina is cemented in Rafa’s first eleven after his latest penalty saving heroics so Carson is likely to be sold or just loaned out endlessly.
Craig Bellamy, Sami Hyypia, Bolo Zenden, Harry Kewell and Mark Gonzalez are heading for the exit at Liverpool.
CaughtOffside Says: Surprising to see Bellamy linked with a move away from Anfield, as he’s a player no club is ever happy to face. But the rest of the names on that list won’t be missed.
Tottenham have joined the race for Hearts keeper Craig Gordon, casting doubt on Paul Robinson’s future.
CaughtOffside Says: England’s #1 has had the kind of season that could see him lose that title before long, but after signing a kabillion year contract with Spurs recently it would be surprising to see him usurped so soon. Gordon has been linked with the likes of Arsenal as well, but the British price tag could scare them away.
West Ham want £2m-rated Middlesbrough defender Chris Riggott.
CaughtOffside Says: Wow. A solid defender when healthy but probably not the kind of player you want to help the stability of the club.
Chelsea are still considering whether to bid for Bolton defender Tal Ben Haim, who is also wanted by West Ham and Portsmouth.
CaughtOffside Says:Originally a laugher of a rumour, Chelsea’s desire to sign Steve Sidwell has made it clear that they’re looking to strengthen their squad with…well, squad players.
Arsenal have joined Tottenham and Manchester United in the chase for Southampton left-back Gareth Bale.
CaughtOffside Says:Uh oh, this might worry Spurs fans if there was more than a 0% chance of Arsene Wenger paying for a left back whose price has been inflated because he is British.
