The world of Premiership transfer rumours news & gossip is full of nonsense, but some nonsense is more interesting that the other nonsense. Speculation is rife in the likes of the Mirror, Daily Mail, Times, Sun and… err… Tribal Football all do their best to predict and/or completely make up the future.
Here’s our opinion on the Premiership transfer rumours we’ve read in the papers and around the net… and if you have any thoughts, pop em in the comments.
Arsene Wenger will attempt to recruit Carlos Tevez from West Ham or bring back Nicolas Anelka in the wake of striker Thierry Henry’s expected departure from the Emirates Stadium to Barcelona. (Various)CaughtOffside Says: Not sure anyone will soften the blow of losing Henry, but Tevez will certainly give the club more hope considering the quality of his play at the end of last season. Anelka is enjoying a resurgence in his career, but we’re guessing the fans will want to look forward, not back.
Manchester City are to bid £10m to sign their former winger Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea. (The Sun)CaughtOffside Says: The poster boy of Chelsea’s extravagance, he seemed to have earned a spot in the rotation for Jose Mourinho towards the end of last season. We don’t really see him going anywhere, though, especially as the club are now paranoid of being left shorthanded by injuries.
Tottenham transfer rumours – Striker Darren Bent is poised to complete a move to Tottenham from Charlton for £16m, a new club record fee. (Daily Mail)CaughtOffside Says: Bale, Kaboul and Bent. Don’t think anyone other than United has had a better transfer season if this goes through. A stark contrast to what’s happened so far over at the Emirates, a tied finally turning?
Manchester United will again bid for Spurs’ Dimitar Berbatov, especially if the club secures Darren Bent, with a move next summer looking almost certain unless Spurs qualify for the Champions League.
CaughtOffside Says: Fair enough, if Tottenham can convince Berbs to stay they really will have no excuse for not giving Liverpool and especially Arsenal a real run for their money.
Sunderland boss Roy Keane is holding talks to sign Preston striker David Nugent. (Daily Mirror)CaughtOffside Says: We’re thinking Keano will get his man. Nugent may be a lifelong Everton supporter but we just find it really hard to imagine anyone saying no to Roysy.
West Ham boss Alan Curbishley wants Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge after growing frustrated at being unable to land Nicky Shorey from Reading. (Sun)CaughtOffside Says: West Ham haven’t quite moved on from being a bit of a punchline ever since Tevezcherano and their takeover. Nearly getting relegated, being turned down at every door by players and generally aspiring, and failing, to shoot for the stars. No sign yet of the dark clouds moving on from Upton Park.
Birmingham are on the verge of landing Scotland striker Garry O’Connor from Lokomotiv Moscow in a £2.65m deal. (Daily Star)CaughtOffside Says: Steve Bruce begins to lay the groundwork for a swift and speedy relegation.
