Spurs Fans Angry Over Bent Deal, But Is Berbatov’s Tottenham Future Now Less Certain?

We’re not surprised that West Ham supporters have quickly moved to the ‘We didn’t want him at that price anyway’ attitude after being rejected by Darren Bent, but it’s a little more unexpected that Tottenham supporters appear quite so divided after allegedly agreeing a fee with Charlton.
Spurs fansite TopSpurs leads the way with a rather passionate rant, likening the player to Chris Armstrong or Kevin Philips, citing a lack of need of yet another striker and especially at the apparent opportunity cost of a quality left sided player. £17 million is never going to be spent without a few doubts, and the lads at Glory-Glory.net are mulling it over in a slightly more balanced discussion.
To us, the big point that seems to be lacking from any of these arguments is what this deal says about Dimitar Berbatov’s future at the club. Yes, he has rejected Manchester United’s attention for this season but next year could be a completely different story - especially if Spurs fail to qualify for the Champions League. Darren Bent is as proven a Premiership striker as Tottenham are going to be able to attract and a very exciting prospect at just 22. He’s played, and scored, under two different managers in two different tactical systems and in two different footballing situations (midtable and relegation).
Perhaps the club are pulling out all the stops to get him this year while he still can, because they know that they’ll need him next season. The lad will have a year to settle at the club without the pressure of being the main striker, and then placed firmly in Berbatov’s shoes after Sir Alex comes knocking a second time?
Last season was tougher as the squad learned to cope without Michael Carrick, with Didier Zokora taking his sweet time in settling into English football. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Spurs management have learned their lesson.
Well, maybe it would.

I thought it an interesting open-minded slant on the Bent transfer, though the Defoe non contract acceptance is also a feasible reason (though wiser to sell him first due price maintenance), this is just as feasible, and would show a lot of foresight from the powers at Spurs.
Angry is not the precise word. Critical is more likely. The thing is that fans are ‎comparing Bent to Berbatov and yet the Bulgarian striker cost the club far less and has ‎made huge returns on his fee, not to mention the ultimate investment if he is to go, God ‎forbid, to Old Trafford. Yet, it is doubtful if Bent could make the same impact be it on ‎the field or in terms of his resale value. And after all, how much does a club need with ‎three excellent strikers who could be supported by a natural left winger to give the team ‎the needed balance on both wings. In the old days, teams had smaller squads yet played ‎‎4 more league games than today. ‎

If anybody bothered to read the official comments from White Hart Lane then you would all know that Levy and Jol have stated that the Club will have 4 quality strikers in the squad - Mido goes and Bent comes in - end of conversation. The reason why Bent’s price is so high is because of his age, he is English and is a proven goalscorer and the increased revenue from TV will push up ALL transfers.
Defoe has NOT turned down a new contract because he has not been offered it yet (he will when he returns to pre season training next week)and please bear in mind that Defoe is only 2 years into a 4 and half year contract. All in all much ado about noting.
How many clubs would cry out for a player who was turning down other offers to join them?

Also, why don’t Spurs fans understand that buying up talent is what brings success. What is Berbatov stays and then is injured for 6 months. Finally, Berbs cost £10M and now proven is worth £30M. If Bent comes in and bangs in loads of goals and becomes an England regular won’t he be worth £25M?
Only a fool would say Bent is unproven. If you check the facts you will find that Bent has a better goal ratio in the league than Defoe, Berbatov, Mido and Keane.
There is divided opinion re Bent but he has to be a great signing he scores more PL goals than Defoe ever has in a side that got relegated, what will he do in a good side. Of course Berbatov will leave next season, that is why he is refusing to sign a contract extension.Bent will be a ready made replacement with proven PL pedigree.

Regardless of who Bent eventually replaces, if in fact Berbs or Defoe leaves or if he is one of four strikers, it still seems like too much money to pay.
I guess some of the paranoia of Bent costing so much and possibly coming to WHL is driven by the fear that Berbatov may be sold which would be humiliating for us.
Bent is a proven premiership striker. Possibly not as skillful as Defoe but far more effective. Berbatov will not go this Summer-next year if we are not in the Champion’s league/or win nothing. Bentwill play well with either Keane or Berby, Defoe does not. Did Erickson and Mclaren think Defoe could not fit in with Rooney? Hapless Crouch,hasbeen Owen,inadequate Smith and overrated Johnson all seem to be above him in the pecking order. Berby and Bent up front could see Keane use his undoubted skill,vision and drive in an attacking midfield role.We could employ Bale and Chimbonda as wingbacks-a role that would suit them both. We would then play Dawson, King and Kaboul or Davies-yawn as our three centre backs.
The Bent deal has nothing to do with Berbatov as he isn’t leaving.
And to think that we were laughing last summer when we sold Carrick for about the same. This transfer is painstakingly humiliating. Why on earth do we need to pay the same amount as Barca did for Henry, to get a 3rd or 4th choice striker?
Lets get something clear as comments seem to be made with ne regard of this extremely important fact. The club obviously wants Berbatov to stay, preferably for his whole career. I believe they also want Defoe to stay, this crap about him not getting a chance is just ridiculous, he has had, and is no better than pretty average. But I believe that the club would like to keep him.
Now say Defoe wants to leave, and the club have an inkling or even know for sure that he will be moving, then what do you do? Wait and see and then be searching desperately for a striker? No you build as and when you can, and if Defoe does stay after being persuaded he will be part of a lethal strikeforce and will play his part a smuch as anybody on finishing what he has helped start, then whats to complain about. We’ve either added or replaced. Berba is the same situation. If HE wants to go then we will at least have a quality strikeforce to cover before Berba would be replaced. If he doesn’t want to go then again, great! We are just stronger than we were. Finally the reason his fee is so high, is because Ipswich are entitled to 20% of the profit Charlton make on the fee they paid for him. So if it is a total of £16m they make a profit of £13.5m, and will then lose £2.7m of that. So Charlton have sold Bent for £13.3m with the initial fee they receive being £12.5m. Now we see Charlton are basically getting the right price for him, and the fact that it will be £3m more is because we have to take it on the chin that Ipswich are going to get that extra money. Charlton get the right money as they should, and if Spurs want Bent they are basically just paying the sell on fee for Charlton, as they wouldn’t be prepared to end up with just about £9m for him, and that is fair enough.
I hate to add fuel to the speculation fire, but I for one (while recognizing his incomapability w/ Keane) think Defoe is a tremendously effective striker - a lethal finisher who tucks them away even if only called in for the last 15 min… hope he doesn’t leave.

Everybody seems to forget that Berbatove only started palying in November and about the same time Robbie keane was injured. If that happened again we’re [only] left with Defoe and no real reserve players coming through - I would think that makes Bent a decent buy. A team maybe only 11 players but a strong squad is so important. Chelsea nearly came a cropper this year with no back up defenders. If we have a good season the team will be playing upward of 50 games again!

To suggest that Bent is a replacement for Berbatov is close to moronic. It implies almost no understanding of football and footballers whatsoever.
Bent is a totally different type of player from Berbatov, but they would complement each other perfectly - which is why Jol wants him in the side. It gives him a different ‘weapon’ from Berba-Keane or Berba-Defoe. It also allows him to play Keane or Defoe and let Berbatov rest once in a while.
As for Bent’s price, it looks high right now. But he’s young and very ambitious. He’s big, fast and strong, he scores lots of goals, and he can only get better playing with Spurs. If Joe Royle reckons he’s the new Lineker, that’s good enough for me.

Well Saha played in the French league for over half of his career. Jol wanted to sign Saha because he is a very good player and because he was rumoured to be unhappy, how you infer from that Saha is superior to Berbatov I have no idea. Like saying Chelsea signed Sidwell because he is better than Wright Phillips.
Also, Berbatov sets up more goals than Saha statistically.

I am a spurs fan living in ROTTERDAM, HOLLAND.I am very surprise that we are spending so much money on BENT only.It beter we buy a good left wing, a central defender and a good attacking midfielder.Our midfield lack punch and that why we are not breaking the top four.We still have Barnard, Pekhart and Terry Dixon. Why dont give these guys a chance. Bent is a good player but we need a true left wing and a good midfield player than a striker.Our midfield is not so good compared to the top four. If you did you would see he is far better than rooney and just as quick(open your eyes next time you watch spurs). Berbatov far better than Rooney. Sorry but that won’t happen. Rooney is better at every department. And Berbatov is slow. I watched games. He is nowhere near Rooney. Not in terms of speed not in terms of vision and understanding of the game. Rooney can single handedly demoslish any side. Berbatov can’t. The whole team must work if Berbatov wants to score. ManU can have a bad day and Rooney can still win them the game.

After all these great deals with players like Berbatov, why on earth would we suddenly take leave of our senses and splash £17 on someone who could well turn out to be very average after all?
I will be very surprised if Spurs buy him. Frankly, I believe Tottenham is the club Bent wants, rather than the other way around.
