Forget New Signings, Here’s How To Make Arsenal Better Now

With Henry leaving, the club chairman looking generally a bit lost, and no particularly re-assuring news from Arsene Wenger, COS new boy Jason looks at what Arsenal can do to improve without spending a pound.
Now that everyone is probably bored with the transfer talk, and the much talked about departure of an Arsenal legend (no names!), I thought I’d start question the grey cells on something different. What would you like to see tried out in pre season training, or the various friendly tournaments Arsenal are due to play in? Things that you think would improve us, or just things you’d like to see done, whether it’s formations, player positions or set pieces.
My shortlist:
- The 4-3-3 formation, would like to see it tried out as we all know we have the players for that kind of setup. Would like to see Adebayor or Bendtner up front as the lone striker with two deep lying wing forwards playing off him.
- Kolo Toure in midfield. The guy has everything you could want a midfield enforcer to have- controlled aggression, loping runs and crunching tackles. Is one of the most eager players to get us into games when we are behind and undoubtedly his energy is better suited to midfield, especially as his lack of heading ability is often exposed in defence.
- Eboue in midfield. We’ve all seen how good he is going forward, although some feel he is suspect defensively. Could he handle the lesser space afforded to him in midfield? If this was pulled off, we may not even need a winger, although some would question Hoyte’s capability as a first choice right back for the entire season.
- Rosicky playing as a shadow striker, in the Dennis Bergkamp role just behind Adebayor. Although Rosicky’s performances on the wing have by no means been poor, he works better controlling the play from Cesc’s position or being a free role as Ronaldinho is for Barcelona. He could accomplish much playing off Adebayor up front, perhaps this could be used if Van Persie gets injured at any point this season.
- Worked set pieces, ones that have been practiced by the club and then can be put into place in matches. An example of this is the one England used in the U21 Championships, where Lita scored with a diving header from two yards out. If executed properly, these can cause havoc
- Lastly, the Van Persie-Bendtner partnership. In a few games as we’ve seen Bendtner shine in the Championship and Van Persie shine in the Premiership, and the duo compliment each other perfectly. Unlike Adebayor, whose finishing at times is erratic Bendtner can put the ball past the keeper like the best of them and the Premiership saw how devastating Van Persie was last season. Put them together and do you have an unstoppable force? Hopefully!?
With no new big signings anywhere on the horizon, what would you do to improve Arsenal with the squad we have right now?

Great. One less midfielder, and move two of your current starting defenders into the midfield. 1) Where’s Gilberto going to play? 2) Or is it Fab you’re going to sit down? (!) 3) Hope you’re willing to have us concede two goals a game and just outscore all opposition. I, personally, am not.
Kolo Toure in midfield-he was fine last season and still managed to have a few shots on goal why change his position. Our defence really would be crap if he wasn’t in the back four.
Eboue didn’t even seem fit enough for right back position last season, why put him in midfield as a winger-this would be ridiculous.
We do need new players for next season and i don’t care what you say-if what you’ve said is going to happen next season at Arsenal and we didn’t add to the team, Arsenal would be a mess and we would be fighting to stay up in the Premiership.

Errm… Toure was our most consistent defender in the past few season. Taking him away is certainly not a wise idea. As in line with your suggestion; 4-3-3 with Rocisky, van Persie & Bendtner up front, Cesc, Toure & Eboue midfield, we would have Clichy, Senderos, Djourou & Gallas in defence (since there is also doubt on Hoyte’s ability). Where do we accomodate other midfielders: Diaby, Hleb, Denilson etc? We would only left with Hoyte on the bench as substitute across the back four. I think I could only agree with you on the last suggestion, WORK HARDER ON SET PIECES!

at times next season. Thats why hes after the auxerre right back. He can do a good job there for sure…he was excellent at shite hart lane when wenger played him there last season

i would like fabianski to be the first gk cause hes wanting to prove himself which is great and also fired warning shots at lehman for his place in the team.

Henry is world class not superman. He did not carry Arsenal, we have other players Toure, RVP, Cesc to name a few. His depature will not b our dimise on the contrary it will allow the focus to be on the other players coming thru like Diaby, Denilson and Bentner. 2 things we need either we get in proven established player (which is very unlikely) or jus let the kids gel and improve. Please trust Arsene, he’s a visionary. Put it this way even with our current team on our worst day our north london rivals wont come close to us.
Arsenal just need one major signing an a couple squad additions. As for the major signing i would like to see Teves or Robinho to be brought in. Whilst a covering defender would also be useful i.e. Mexes or Curtis Davies.

I agree we could have Ebuoe in right mid i would also like to see merida given a chance in this years League Cup, this kid is potentialy better than cesc.
Finally forget playing walcott on the wing i think its fair to say anytime he has played upfront he looks much more at home

Cant give Bettender a full time role. Addebayore is a good sub. Van Persie can start.
I’d like to see Walcott in more starting positions.
Note that: Bettender, Theo, Cesce (all possible Starters) and U20 players !!! Cant afford too many young players. Freddy Should be given more roles, he is the only over 30 player in the squad (beside grandpa Lehman).

Gotta Keep KING KOLO at centre back and in my opinion captain too! Eboue I don’t think is fit enough for midfield. We defo need a classy winger in our side, I would opt to buy a centre back for cover and obvioulsy another striker along with a winger. I don’t think we need a “bigname” signing. Have never understood when you hear that. Our last “big” sigings have not really been hits…. Reyes and Wiltord. Before that the last established player we really bought was Overmars so I think Arsene has already proved no need for big names.
Trust me folks we’re gonna be fine next season. We always at our best when coming out of adversity… I remember summer of 2001 and AFC being in crisis, PV4 was gonna leave and we were in trouble according to the media - we then won the double! Up The Arse!

we will never play 4-3-3 under wenger. we need a striker and a winger to replace freddy, lets face it, we all have seen his demise, far far far far far better players who still had their pace and some form but were the same age as freddy have been let go by arsene so it is only a matter of time, or else he really is as blind as everyone says he is!!!

I’d probably look at my calendar, realise there’s plenty of time before the start of the new season, and stop hyperventilating over every little piece of sensationalist rubbish on newsnow.
I can see why people aren’t too confident about Freddie being able to make a big impact next season, but most people are saying we need experience and we need a winger. Great so let’s remove both of those things in one player =/ He’s been poor the past two seasons but as a bench player and utility player I don’t see why he can’t be very useful for Arsenal. He can get scoring again, sure not as many, but there’s no reason why he can’t contribute his share.

I agree with most of your thoughts entirely. Henry is ireplaceable, as was Bergy, so instead of trying to find the new Henry, change the system to suit the players you have. Toure in midfield is a great shout, one which I have been saying for a long time, which would give Djourou a chance in the back four along side Gallas. If he didn’t work out, it’s easier to find a defender than a striker. Rosicky in the hole is a plan, and I think Hleb can play there too. We’ve not replaced the wing strength of Pires and Freddy, so unless we can sign Ribery (gone) or Wright-Phillips, then lose the width and go with 3 up front. Make the pitch a bit smaller though!

Hay!!! If arsenal can make two more signing, Arsenal will win the next Premiership and Champions league. They need to sign Martin and One winger so that Rosicky can play 10. we will see best of him (Rosicky) if the is playing from the central

Toure is a gift from god, I would not stick him in the midfield. He’s one of the best center backs in the world and how many times has he had a goal saving touch right when the opposing team looked to have capitalized on an Arsenal mistake. Djourou is the obvious replacement for Gallas in the coming years. RVP is back, Diaby and Denilson supply plenty of cover in the midfield assuming Wenger pulls the 4-5-1 formation. Plug either one of those guys in the center with Cesc and Silva and we are set. Walcott still has time to develope so I think a speedy powerful forward is needed. Martins, Anelka, Vanger-Love, Tevez, Quaresma, Babel…etc Hopefully Kroenke will buy the team off this old money monarchy of a board that refuses to put any of their own money (that daddy and mommy gave them 60 years ago) for the team to compete in the transfer market. If Kroenke buys the team, Dein will come back, Wenger will sign on and Arsenal will rise again, keep the faith.

awright Maverick111, you’ve got it ALL figured out dontchya. One big problem though… you must be one dumb mother f’er!!! I’m not gonna make too much of your 4-2-2 comment — it’s apparently a typo, but you haven’t even INCLUDED Lehman in your side (you like Fabianski, and that’s fine, but you have no confidence in a keeper who is clearly amongst the best in the world, and prefer Almunia instead?!?!). That’s just plain stupid. the reasons you give for preferring Fabianski are also not sensible: he fires shots at Lehman and wants to prove himself?!? Lehman HAS proven himself, and he IS the # 1. Fabianski will have his shot, but Almunia, good as he was in limited action against lesser competition in 06-07, he’ll not see much of the pitch this season.
Next, the back four: I’m sure you have some reason for including Senderos, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what it could be… I’d give the sorry SoS away if any other team would just offer to take his contract. you have NO excuses for not including Clichy though… he was the best wing back in the Premiership - either wing - last season, and made it perfectly obvious why Cashley Cole was expendable. Gallas and Toure should remain together in the center, and they should both be better off with a full camp together… injuries decimated this side last year and it really showed in team defence. And of course, WG played only 20 matches or so… Senderos was primarily guilty for more goals than any other player on the team, and he wasn’t even as steady as Djourou (or however you spell that!).
Midfield: I love Freddie, but it’s well past him. I want him in the side for sure, but more often than not he should come on late. when he starts, he shouldn’t be allowed more than 60 minutes. Personally, I think he should be rested heavily and saved for UCL and cup ties. Rosicky is a far better choice, both for playmaking and scoring — his productivity will surely pick up in his second season. He does need to keep more width though, and have a stronger commitment to defending. I wouldn’t mind seeing him directly behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1 with Cesc up top and gilberto and Diaby complimenting one another in defensive posture. Either way, if you want to include Freddie in the first side, Hleb will have to start on the subs bench.
Up top: I’d also like to see what Bendtner can bring, but I’m not sure Arsene is going to give him much of a chance just yet. RvP for certain, and Adebayor will have to learn to play with him. Sounds like Anelka may be on his way back, and Martins may be in the fold… that, in my opinion would make it easier to play Bendtner and leave Adebayor on the bench, but EA has not exactly been a disappointment… he deserves his time on work rate and production, and should continue to improve his scoring.
Personally, I like the Gunners to be able to change their shape and move from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 to 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 without changing more than one player… they have the versatility - in fact it is their strength - and should use it to impose their style on whomever they’re playing.
Last but not least, I’d like to apologize for calling you stupid, but unfortunately you seem to be a little slow… or just plain dumb. Oh well, you can pretend to be serious, but you can’t pretend to be smart. sucks to be you.

if we don’t make any signings we will be under too much pressure, and altho we have enough quality to stay top four, it could be a third winless season.
So, whats going to happen if we have injuries?

- Eboue in RM, Hoyte RB -> Is that why we’re going to sign Sagna? Oh, are we selling Hleb then? Or just play him in the left. My goodness, i also forgot Walcott is supposed to share the right flank!
- Toure in midfield - Sounds cool. But he is our most reliable and consistent CB. Now, why would you want to pluck him out and replace him with either Senderos or Djourou? Senderos cannot partner Gallas there, we need Toure’s speed at the back as Gallas sometimes has his mind thinking about whats the next story he wants to tell the press. Djourou, yeah. He’s fine, a good defender and i rate him better than Senderos right now.
- Rosicky in AM role - That is ok, he does play in the hole and his shots will hopefully give us more goals from midfield. Where does that leave us then? Hleb in the left? However, in truth, i rather have Rosicky in the AM than to have Adebayor as a Striker.
- Bendtner is not proven, we simply can’t throw him into the EPL. I bet he’ll come in as a sub first.
Arsenal needs two strikers, a defensive midfielder and at least a winger.

I like 4-3-3 (1-4-3-3.. can’t forget the keeper), and we do seem to have an abundance of central midfielders. But how big is the difference from 4-5-1 and 4-3-3? 4-5-1 Wider and a little more defensive? You could probably interchange them without substitutions though.
I agree that we will need to get a few players, we at least need to replace Henry and Reyes (is he stil an Arsenal player btw? Atletico?) But if that didn’t happen and I’d have to pick a team..:

Why would Arsene sell or put either Eboue or Hoyte when he offer them long term contracts? Sagna is not coming and even if he does, Wenger will have to put Eboue in RM.
Sell Fabregas? Why? Who would you want to play in CM? He’s the best player for us last season and he’s young, very very young. Which means he has many more good years ahead and will continue to improve.
I think we have tried 4-5-1 in the EPL before and we were pretty much toothless. The 4-5-1 works well in Europe because its more cautious and we relied a lot on counter attacks. The 4-5-1 we play also quickly evolves to 4-2-1-3 while we are attacking (AM-LW-RW-Striker). Pretty similar to a 4-3-3. But still, Wenger’s plans work best with 4-4-2 in the EPL.
Yet another person mentioned a 4-4-3 formation. STOP IT. Might as well have a 4-6-2 while you’re at it, or a 9-2-1 =/
I don’t see why Arsenal can’t switch between a 4-5-1 and a 4-3-3 when changing between attack and defense, it would make sense really. Since Bendter hasn’t proven he can play at the very top level JUST yet, I say Ade and van Persie and Rosicky behind would work nicely, although Ade or van Persie would be best to stay up whilst defending.
Lehmann shouldn’t be number 1 next year. I can’t count how many times his stupid fucking antics resulted in us conceding a goal last year. He’s a really great shot stopper, but every fucking time there’s a set piece in a dangerous position he’s fucking around getting the ref involved for no reason. All this does is distract the defense as it’s hard to concentrate when some 6 foot 5 German is collapsing in agony after being touched by an opposition player. Seriously it’s arguably Arsenal’s biggest problem with defending set pieces - they can’t concentrate because of his fucking crap. It’s not like he even is being genuine, he’s just fucking around trying to get a free kick or something, it’s hard to even tell but he should just play the game (because it is actually a contact sport :)) and stop this shit. If he will do that, then sure he should play, if not then give the other two his place.
Arsenal NEED to sign a striker they have no choice in the matter if they want to qualify for champions league. Why the hell is Wenger on holiday when the other teams are buying now!? We’re beign left with crumbs again! Chelsea got Pizarro for Free and his scoring goals at COPA America. Man Utd bought Nani(C.Ronaldo) and Anderson(Ronaldinho). I was really hoping Wenger was going for Nani, so i was very dissapointed to hear Man Utd bought him. Price was very high though! Liverpool seemed to have signed Torres and Quaresma. Quaresma is a good winger from Porto. Great crosser of the ball, much better than Pennant. We need a STRIKER and a WINGER who can, cross, score with feet and head and take set pieces. We’re being priced out of everything.
But if we had no cash whatsoever, I would keep the backline as is coz it seems to be gettin better.

the total is 34.5, and freddie will go on a free so more like 28 mil. we’ll need at least half that for a striker, we need a left winger, and it looks like we might be getting 7 mil sagna. so no money to buy buy buy!!!
i think sagna has been earmarked to have the pedigree to cover right back AND toure, meaning djourou is classy like gallas and traore can cover clichey (as can gallas if needs be) meaning its just to make sure we have strong cover. senderous will be sold hopefully and we’ll add a left sided winger, an experienced striker and perhaps one more. thats why i think babel fits the bill so well, like van p he can play on the wing or as a striker which will undoubtedly be his senior possition in the future. babel and martins, plus sagna, and maybe another depending on reyes money coming thru.
the 4-3-3 formation is a favourite of mine, i have always liked the way the dutch team play with van persie on the wing cutting in and unleasing his mighty left foot, with either Adebayor or Bendtner working the lone striker i think they could do a good job especially Adebayor who works of his socks everytime he puts on an arsenal shirt. but if we bought Martins(who is a fantastic player) where would he play as a lone striker or on one of the wings with his frighten pace. Babel is also a possible on the wing as he has played there for the dutch team and did a good job, this leaves us with many options to try: Lehmann

This would leave us with many options and available to use in our friendlies and tournaments before the start of season. The midfield are capable of creating many chances with gil sitting just in front of the defence.

If Kolo moves to mid the who replaces him behind? and who replaces the one who replaces him behind? bse we obviously need that considerring the no. of matches we have to play and injuries. Wenger must buy another lethal guy, to help RVP as adebayor takes time to know where the net really is…Thoough he is a good passer upfront and can hold the ball. He can play with any striker.
For the midfield I think Hleb is too slow to play on the wings, but Rocicky has the pace. Hleb can do better in the hole in case of change of system, maitaining Rosisky on the wings. Hleb has performed better in any 4-5-1 system played by Wenger. Recall champs League 2006.

sacking wenger would be the quickest way to end up like leeds. we have a infamously limited purse when it oes to transfer funds, maybe wenger doesn’t have the money to spend. i’m sure he’s not doing it for fun.
the board have failed to provide wenger with the funds to compete. but we are not bad off yet, if we can get 3 players this summer we’re good to go. if we had the money we could get malouda, tevez, veloso, sagna and maybe babel. but we don’t, its not wengers fault.

i think 433 wud be a great formation for us, we can play walcott (rwf) van persie (lwf) and adebayor or eduardo as the (cf).
I think the signing of the French Right back means Eboue is being moved up to midfield and that will give Justin Hoyte another year to grow. With all the injuries in the center of defense I’d like to see Toure and Djourou with Gallas and Swiss Phil as cover. Clichy will hopefully have found some crossing ability and maybe 5 goals, and will allow Traore another season with the Carling Cup squad.
In the midfield we Hleb should get competition from Eboue for his spot on the right. Cesc and Silva with Denilson and Diaby waiting in the wings, and Rosicky pretty much unopposed on the left.
Up front Van Persie and Ade, and eventually Da Silva or Bendtner with Walcott for pure pace.
The only hole I see left in this squad fighting on multiple fronts is at Left midfield. If Rosicky fails to stay healthy this season, or just needs a rest, wenger needs someone in the Ljundberg, Pires, Reyes mold to bring on. My choice for this signing would be Morten Gamst Pederson, a true left sided pplayer who ended last year in great form, and wouldn’t cost the ridiculous amounts a Malouda Ribery or Quaresma are fetching.
I think Owen or Anelka who could replace henry,
in the middle Arsenal has very good players, i think the important thing is to “do the goals” and finish with the ball.
Singing a defender cold be good because Senderos is terrible in that position.
