Spurs About To Get Bent

June 28, 2007

The Times, amongst many others, are reporting that Tottenham have finally agreed a deal with Charlton for Darren Bent for about £13 million rising to a possible £16.5m -breaking their club transfer record in the process,

Bent is believed to be willing to accept a weekly salary considerably less than the £75,000 he was offered by West Ham United. The 23-year-old turned down a five-year contract at Upton Park after West Ham had agreed a fee of £16m plus Hayden Mullins, the midfield player.

Finally! There are still plenty of Tottenham fans who seem to think they’re mis-allocation their transfer budget at best, getting utterly ripped off at worst (or both). But it does seem like the club badly want their man, and it’s only a matter of time before they get him.

Whether the likes of Gareth Bale, Younes Kaboul and Bent prove to be difference makers or not at least the white half of North London have had players moving in the right direction. Arsenal fans have resorted to plotting the best they can do without any signings at all.

Yes! Spurs are going to employ the 3-3-4 as made famous by Danny Blanchflower! Oh wait, this isn’t 1961. In that case, 16m for a third choice striker is just absurd.

I have faith in the people who’ve been in charge at the lane for the past few years. If they have spent this much money on a striker, then they must know something that the rest of us are missing.

We all know something about Bent if we take our heads out of our arses, he scores at the rate of 1 goal every 2 games on average and will vastly improve our squad and be able to play with either Keane or Berbatov or replace either of them in case of injury or suspension or just squad rotation.

I think now we deffinately have the best strike force in the league. Who has better than Berbatov, Bent, Keane and Defoe? No one. I do think though that we will sell Defoe for probably 13 mil or so. I cant see any other way that we could finance this deal, knowing also of our need for investment in left midfield and centre half. At this rate, we will prob spend 40m, Bent 15m, Bale 6m, Kaboul 8m, and left wing [SWP?]11m. Now we can all see who’s going, Mido 4m, ziegler 1.5, Gardner 2m, Murphy 1.5, Ekkoto 2m and please Ghally 4m. I still cant see us being 25 m in the red, hence Defoe will go. Its now or never for 4th or higher, come on you SPURS!!

3rd striker? 4th striker? Christ this is getting tedious hearing people say that. He is just A striker, hopefully one of 4, and will be an excellent servant to the club for years. I really think he will surprise alot of our fans and will score goals. If Kaboul does join aswell then we have improved the squad greatly. Who cares how much people cost if they do the business. If we bought Bent for 10m EVERYBODY would be happy, but if he does what he is being bought for and is successful then what does the fee matter then? Transfer fee’s become insignificant when a player does well and it really doesn’t matter as long as it doesn’t hinder us from buying the left winger and/or defensive midfielder we need. Let’s be pleased the club is ambitios, prepared to invest and has a real plan. Welcome Dazza!!!

James - I dont think Defoe will go. The only possible reason I could think that is if I paid attention to wild speculation from shit newspapers and websites who just make wild guesses to make a story. I’m also not sure signing Bent makes it exactly clear who will be leaving, especially Assou-Ekotto or even Gardner. Not sure about Ghaly either, think Jol can turn things round with him. Also really hope our left winger isn’t SWP. I’d really like a real LW and not a clone of Lennon stuck out there. SWP doesn’t impress me on the right and have never seen him on the left, but of course we ahve been linked today so it must be true!? Sorry for the sarcasm but it’s bollocks.

After spending on Bale, Kaboul, Bent, Taraabt and a few youngstera, Spurs still have another 75 millions to spend this season. My Uncle Joe Lewis will give more if necessary. Beware all of you!….The new Champion is born again!

    Chelsea who? Man U who?

Arsenal???? you must be joking!…please don’t make me laugh. It is not funny.

From Feb to March, last season, Spurs scored 3 goals or more in each match.

you’ll see score lines like 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 more regularly in spurs matches next seaon when I’ll start with 4 strikers, and another 2 on he bench in every league match.

And I am not talking about wimbeldon tennis here!

Paul Robinson will increase his goal tally too. Anyway he still has a higher goal tally in the league than the 12-million ’super kid’ from that sinking club.

he’s a great prospect, and second only to TH the season before on prem goals. a great signing for most clubs - but you’d have to question dropping what must surely be the bulk of your transfer budget on a striker when you had a great first three, one his isn;t gonna want to hang around now (defoe) and completely lacking a decent left sided player. ah well, we’ll see.

the best news was ole liverpool spunking 20+ mil on torres and giving away a creative midfielder out of one of the least creative midfields in the prem. now that was ridiculous. not even in the top 5 goal scorers in spain this lad. and he’ll struggle ta fuk in his first season too so thats liverpool screwed this year. sickens.

    darren bent - quality signing.

Gareth Peters is also being linked with Spurs, West Brom and Leyton Orient.

Peters has been predominant in non-league football playing the striker role for Frickley Athletic.

Peters dubbed “pop eye peters” due to extreme running technique and brute strength is likely to be available for a fee of around £20,000 which is viewed as a snip by many clubs for the current B & Q employee.

Forget these rumours the main ones are below:

Ryan Tolley dubbed the “terminator” and is a former Frickley Reserve is being courted by Stenhousemuir & reportedly St Johnstone who are reported to be willing to offer him a two year deal.
The 17 year old goalkeeper might be playing with Jason Scotland next season.

Blessed Kawenya the Zimbabwian prodigy and under 18’s national team captain who plays in the South African league is reportedly being tracked by a host of top clubs and Birmingham, Southend and Luton.
He is dubbed the new “Yakubu” due to his pace and strength and last season registered 17 goals in 20 games for the Kaiser Chiefs.

James Rushton cousin of former Leeds star Alan Smith and current Man utd star is being courted by various clubs. Among these are Rushden & Diamonds, Torquay and Farsley Celtic.

Rushton dubbed “Cousin it” due to uncontrollable hairstyles is said to be excited by the prospect as this season he has been watched while playing for Hensall under 18’s.

Reportedly, Lincoln City have been alerted and are willing to offer this rare gem a one year contract with the oprospect of an extension.

Bleached blonde whizz-kid James Wallis has recently come under the watchful eye of various top flight clubs such as Wigan and Aston Villa. Newly promoted Sunderland have also shown a keen interest with Roy Keane hoping to tame this rare talent. Conference side Whitby Town also offered Wallis a contract, to which he declined stating, “not by the hairs of my chinny chin chin.” James who has been dubbed as “the playboy” attracted this attention by his immense performances at left back for the minor league strugglers, Castleford FC.

A host of clubs such as liverpool and Arsenal have also shown a keen interest in pacy winger, Craig Bettney. Bettney, who has history with clubs such as Altofts JFC, where his performances pre-dominantly gained this interest, has caused Liverpool to desperately seek Bettneys signature to their current offered contract, Rafa Benitez has claimed, “Craig would compliment our dearest Dirk by feeding him his….balls”
Bettney is more commonly known to his collegues as “Buttney” and is renowned for his size in the changing rooms.

nationality of the players means nothing with the silverware wenger has brought, sure i’d like more english players in the side but who’s good enough? i’d have taken hargreaves as a replacement for gilberto but we have diaby/denilson looking to fill that role and at 5 million for the pair compared to hargreaves 18!! no brainer - especially when silva has a few years in him yet.

again i’d have been happy with bent too but no where near that price. martins for 13 mil? far better choice for the cash. martins and babel for just two mil more than bent.

is it any wonder wenger aviods the english players?

I wish teams weren’t such bandwagoners to fall into this trap of paying 16 million for an unproven striker.

It’s more like 13, but even then that’s overpriced. Should be closer to 10. What if spurs, west ham or liverpool laughed at that 16m fee and ended their interest….what message would that send to charlton?

Stop overpricing your players, specially when you’re in the second division. (refuse to call it championship)

    I do love a good football debate…

I think Bent is a cracking player and more than capable of securing a starting place (Alongside Berbatov).
I was pleased when we (West Ham) put a bid in for him.
Its also nice to see a player not only thinking about money, even if it is to our detriment.

Yes it’s a lot of money, but if you want to progress you have to pay the asking price.
Well done to Charlton for holding out though.

However, you do tend to think that Spurs might go the way of Keegan’s Newcastle – scoring for fun and conceding in the same vein.
I could be wrong… I usually am when it comes to football but I for one would love that to happen.

My prediction for West Ham Vs Spurs this season.

    West Ham 7 Spurs 5!!

    700k for winning la liga.

yeah well once you get into that kind of money its rarely a straight cash deal is it?

still pricey - given your subsequent strength in that area and your need to fill gaps elsewhere. it’d would made more sence arsenal paying for him, but wenger won’t ever spend over the odds for a player.

if the goals keep coming as they did last year this’ll all be a distant memory anyway. and what if he bangs in the winner on the final day of the season to overhaul liverpool and claim fourth? well he’ll have just paid for himself and then some.

    still pricey for now tho….

I can’t say anything but things are not as bad as they seem. At least you’re not called Spurs, which from my education seems to be a footwear addition - yep not even a shoe, but a add on. Sort of sums up their role in the premiership really.
