Latest Transfer Rumours: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Spurs, Portsmouth, Blackburn, Liverpool, Man United, Bolton

June 29, 2007

The world of Premiership transfer gossip is full of nonsense, but some nonsense is more interesting that the other nonsense. Speculation is rife in the likes of the Mirror, Daily Mail, Times, Sun and… err… Tribal Football all do their best to predict and/or completely make up the future.

Here’s our opinion on the Premiership transfer rumours we’ve read in the papers and around the net… and if you have any thoughts, pop em in the comments.

Carlos Tevez’s “heart is in the Premier League” according to his representative Kia Joorabchian. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United want him.CaughtOffside Says: Yes, strange that it’s probably the league where they might get the most money too. But Tevez looked like the kind of lad who just wanted to enjoy his football and be appreciated, he’d get at least one of those at West Ham and both at any of the clubs interested in him. Arsenal or Liverpool have the greatest need for Tevez, and with Rafa setting his sights on Torres we wouldn’t be surprised to see Carlos at the Emirates. Except that would require Wenger to spend some cash, which he generally isn’t very good at.

Real Madrid, who also want Chelsea’s Arjen Robben and Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas. The Spain midfielder is devastated by Thierry Henry’s departure.CaughtOffside Says: All Cesc talks about is playing for Barcelona one day, and he seems to be a hyper ambitious little lad. We can’t see him wanting to stick around with Thierry much longer unless the club invest in some top class players. If Cesc is the best player on the team, he won’t be happy. Robben isn’t going anywhere as long as Mourinho is there.

West Brom have rejected a £10 million offer for captain Curtis Davies, it has been revealed.CaughtOffside Says: Wowsers, and we thought for sure Spurs were going to get in there for their 19th centre back. Davies was so highly rated a couple of seasons ago, but apparently some inconsistency has struck and scared the big boys off.

Liverpool will exchange 20 million and Luis Garcia for Fernando Torres while Spurs snap up Darren Bent for 16 million.CaughtOffside Says: One of these lads is going to do worse than the other, leading to a battle of fans taunting each other about who was a bigger waste of money. Bent’s already done it in the Premiership for two year’s running, but both clubs have opened themselves to a good bit of mockery the minute either has a dry spell.

Charlton are set to invest some of the £16.5m they received for Darren Bent in Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts.CaughtOffside Says: Unless they intend to spend more of that cash than they need to, Blackburn boss Mark Hughes probably isn’t letting go of a man who started to really hit it off with star striker Benni McCarthy.

Bent’s arrival at Tottenham will trigger another move with Jermain Defoe going to Aston Villa, although Liverpool and Man United are thought to be considering a bid as well.CaughtOffside Says: There’s little chance either Benitez or Ferguson will be going after a player like Defoe, who is great on the ball but lacks the footballing intelligence to really succeed at a top club.

Frank Lampard wants his future resolved by Monday. Juventus and Barcelona want the Chelsea midfielder.CaughtOffside Says: His “future resolved”? Isn’t he the one holding out for a kabillion pounds a week?

Another Chelsea midfielder could also be off. Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp says he would “love” to sign French veteran Claude Makelele.CaughtOffside Says: We can’t believe that, unless it’s by his own choice, Maka would leave the Premiership at this stage. There are so many clubs who could use his experience and offer him less games to have to play in. Any club competing for a UEFA spot would be a bit mentalist to say that they couldn’t use Maka in a tough European or Premiership away game.

Manchester United will offer £4m and Alan Smith for Michael Owen from Newcastle, who could also be signing Edmilson on a free from Barcelona.CaughtOffside Says: Interesting, interesting. Owen at United would certainly knock in the goals given the service he gets. His knees may have gone but his predatorial instincts in the box are still world class, any lad that small who scores so often with his head has something special about him. Newcastle, on the other hand, would get a player who isn’t really any better than they could attract prior to the takeover. Must do better.

Aston Villa’s Steven Davis is on the verge of signing for Fulham in a £4m deal.CaughtOffside Says: We thought Villa and O’Neill rated Davis? They do? Oh then this must be total bollocks.

Bolton plan to gazump Everton and sign Sheffield Unuited’s Phil Jagielka. They have tabled a £5m bid.CaughtOffside Says: Jagsy is a quality player and would, of course, fit in with the workman midfields at either Bolton or Everton. We were completely unaware that Bolton had that kind of money, but hey if Sammy Lee can convince him that Bolton wont be relegated by Christmas then go for it.

What’s that about footballing intelligence and defoe?

He has pace, and good shooting power. Man U could use someone like him. Footballing intelligence can be developed as well. Wouldn’t be a bad signing for 8 million pounds.

Man United gotta be kidding with that alan smith + 4 m = owen deal.

    Steven Davis-

‘CaughtOffside Says: We thought Villa and O’Neill rated Davis? They do? Oh then this must be total bollocks.’

O’Neill stopped playing Davis last season, is linked with several central midfielders and has openly admitted he may release him so he can get 1st team football. Davis will be gone in the next few weeks.

    Do you even watch football?

I cannot understand where you are at with makalalie - Portsmouth ARE a premiership club - hopefully pushing for Europe next year after an extremely successsful 06/07 season……..Or are you saying that POMPEY are not a premiership club - if so please explain……….

I recken United should go for Owen, OK he’s an ex-scum but he’s played with rooner on internation scene and it’s a good price. Smith isn’t going to be a first team player and bang in twenty goals a season. It’s worth a risk.

Gudjonson would also be a good signing, tall and intelligent. I think he’d probably make a good partnership with rooney.

Having said that united might play the 433 system next year with rooney supported by two wingers. The signings seem to point to that.

Let hope rooney doesn’t get injured!

It would be interesting to see the effect Makelele would have at Portsmouth.
He would certainly bolster their defensive strength, and with his signing there would be no reason for Pompey not to get into Europe next season.

I would be very impressed with Tevez if he decided
to remain at West Ham, but i dont see it happening with all of the interest.

Why would it be interesting to see this over rated, over paid wazzo at Portmouth. Tevez only interest seems to be money - so he’ll go to who pays him the most.

It’s either tevez or torres. Besides, that would leave kuyt and crouch on the bench. Kuyt is too new to be shipped out. In fact he’s most likely scoring the most goals next season while torres settles in with 15-18 goals.

Crouch on the other hand, he’s in rafa’s long term plans but he was better than kuyt last season and still was 3rd choice.

Villa to sign Wright Phillips, Reo-Coker, Geremi, Scott Carson, Bellamy or Defoe, and a new left back. Perhaps Phillip Lahm would do nicely.

7 new players! 2 of which have already signed for other clubs! I think if any team replaces 7 first teamers they will struggle for the first half of the season as they all get to know each other. They dont just pop together like a jigsaw mate!
