TWO MEN ENTER: BARRY vs LAMPARD.
September 14, 2007
Two Men Enter is a new CaughtOffside feature, where we’ll pit people against each other and ask you, the readers, to determine who comes out on top. Today we have the pressing question that has come out of England’s International Games. Mr Gareth Barry of Mr Frank Lampard?
Steve McClaren’s last two results have been his best. A good victory over Israel, a great victory over Russia and a heart pumping return for Michael Owen (Britney: THAT is how you do a comeback luv, get yer bum over to the north east and suck in the revitalizing Geordie air!).
Many people seem startled by this sudden upsurge in England’s results. Has McClown taken a page out of Sir Alf’s book and played a team rather than a putting out bunch of disinterested cash munching cows onto the Wembley turf? Their was a oh-so-sweet daisy chain of cute friendships blossoming all over Wembley on Wednesday. Mica Richards arm-in-arm with his old City bud SWP, Mickey Owen skipping in unison with Emile, the two Chelsea Cole’s down the left, and a friendship now given a chance on the football field: Gareth Barry & Stevie Gerrard. Now before the Aston Villa man, gets a Stevie “G” tattoo in a personal space, and puts up his “Gareth & Stevie” sticker on the top of his Ford Cortina windscreen - we have to establish one thing. GARETH BARRY OR FRANK LAMPARD. Stick with cool as a cucumber Gareth or go back to Frank, a favourite of the legendary “boo-boys”. So which is it? BARRY vs LAMPARD - WHO DO YOU CHOOSE?

Got something to say?

hard one as they both do different jobs but i think barry would be the best to partner steven gerrard as england need to build a team around there best player (gerrard).
frank is shit.
did we need more evidence?
england fans should thank god frank finally got an injury
Well, if the only choice is Barry or Lampard as a defensive or box-to-box midfielder, then obviously you pick Barry as he can play those positions, Lampard can’t.
Lampard, despite the fuss, is a decent attacking midfielder, even if he is a bit limited in the range things he can do for a team. Unfortunately for him, Gerrard is just better, more versatile and plays the same position. That’s all there is to this. Comparisons with Barry make no more sense than asking if Lampard should play instead of Terry or Robinson.
tbh, Lampard wouldn’t have got into the team past Scholes or Gascoigne either. Sucks to be him I guess. Being the second best attacking midfielder shouldn’t be seen as some kind of disgrace. But at the same time he shouldn’t be picked at the cost of leaving other positions empty.
i am an arsenal fan, i dont think lumpard is shit , but i feel barry has more to his game, short passing, passing through the eye of the needle, technically better, but lumpard isnt shit, you can say his game is simple
Easy. Gareth Barry. He is consistent. He complements Gerrard. Lampard is just a poor version of Gerrard - there may be better subs out there (Joey Barton maybe? but he has problems that come with him) If Barry is injured there’s always Hargreaves - although he seems to be inconsistent. Personally I think Ledley King would be a better defensive midfielder, if he ever recovers…
If you’re taking it player for player you would go for Lampard. He scores more goals (even if via the aid of deflections) and gets more assists. Granted he is surrounded by better players at Chelsea than Barry at Villa but if you look at their stats on Pro Evo Lamps is better.
But you can’t just pick the best 11 Englishmen and put them in the starting line-up. It’s about balance and frankly (pardon the pun) Barry gives England better balance.
The question that remains is will McLaren bottle it and recall Neville, Lampard and Rooney when their fit even though it’s quite obvious he’s found a winning formula. If anything he came upon the formula completely by accident. His hand was forced and he had to play Barry and Heskey and the whole team worked surprisingly well.
To complete the luck he needs Robinson to pick up an injury of some kind and hey presto he’s got a team that could get quite far.
Will mclaren now stick with the winning team or when the big guns come back he will discard heskey and barry, I feel maclaren is not brave enough only time will tell.

why don’t you dare him?

yes i am. are you having a good day yourself?
To me as a great supporter of England Mr GARETH BARRY is a far much better player to link up with STEVE than LAMPARD.
No question Barry; it’s a team game, and Gareth just fits better than Lamps. Barry is technically accomplished and his left footishness dovetails nicely with Stevie G who favours his right.
fat frank or g.barry
to be frank, every one is jumping on lampards back because he had a shit world cup so did gerrad, rooney, and others is a bit unfair on frank because gerrad and lamps are the same, play well for club, but not country ,and they both are world class ,but it is easier to pick on lampard and boo him.
but having said that we should try gerrad/ barry or lampard/barry to see which one works best and try it.

and i thought arsenal fans were meant to appreciate the beautiful game….
barry vs lampard is old news it all about barry vs hargreves now
Lampard looks lost and out of depth when he plays for England, he is not a player that looks anything special, without his chelsea teammates! Average player surrounded by world class player at his club, he gets exposed at international level! end of!
gerrard had a bad world cup
he had an ok one and finished our top goalscorer
The answer is simple; you keep both of them and drop Gerrard. His performances for England have been horrible, especially visible over the last two games when Lampard was not their to take the blame.
He was easily the weakest player for both games: Bad passing, losing/giving away the ball, no good shots, no assists, no goals, no creativity or just not existent totally.
So much for the “inspirational” leadership he offers, England played well despite him. Barry saved his ass in most recent games and controlled the midfield which is what Lampard or Xabi usually have to do for him while he gets the glory.
Look at how Liverpool has played without him, better and cleaner. His passing accuracy rate is BELOW the prem average for CMs (if you want a fact). I know it is sacrilege to point out his rampant mediocrity but it is true.
England should drop Gerrard and put Lampard and Barry together, that is a fierce pairing.
barry for sure, and if hargreaves comes back and joe cole finds a new way to be out for 3 months, he can play on the left too.
if you honestly think gerrard isnt as good as lampard, go to youtube and type in gerrard free kick aston villa
youll change your mind
Didn’t Alf Ramsey say; “You don’t select the best players; You select the best team”? Lampard should be dropped.

Can I also watch the dive he took to get the free kick? Lampard is a better player, flat out
Lampard scores for Chelsea because they play to overpower opposition defences and win loose balls in the final third, Lampard thrives in this set up. England can’t do this for a start and anyway it’s not so easy to overpower international defences.
Barry has been successful for England because he has been able to link play to the front men, enabling them to score. Barry doesn’t commit himself forward so much and therefore he can provide cover for the defence as well. In other words he is a proper midfielder - like Gerrard.
The benefit of the England injury crisis has meant that we’ve been forced to play players in their correct positions doing the jobs that those positions demand. Seems to work.
i would play BOTH lampard and barry, and ask stevieG to fuck off to the bench or the right wing, and STAY THERE!
Why between Barry and Lampard? What has Gerrard done in the last 4 games in his favoured position for England?
I have concentrated fully on watching Lampard play since his recovery from injury and am astonished to how good he is at passing the ball. Now since Ten Cate joined Chelsea he has tried to emphasise the importance of ball retention and pass and movement in the team. I always rated Lampard highly as a decent passer of the ball but over the last 3 games I have witness him take his passing game to another level of excellence. Whether Ten Cate can take some credit for this or whether Lampard is just trying harder now because of the boo boys who knows? What I have witnessed is the way he distributes the ball quicker. He now moves off to get the ball back and is producing some neat one, two and one touch passing with his team mates. What is more impressive is his accuracy of hitting 40 yard balls to feet and for runners which are almost to perfection. This is not a drooling over Lampard but merely how I have seen him play for Chelsea in the last week. He has made 3 assists from open play in a space of a week and been instrumental in most Chelsea moves. Perhaps this has a major influence on how Chelsea are suddenly scoring for fun and breaking down defences with ease. Ten Cate I believe is the man orchestrating things behind the scenes whilst Lampard is pulling the strings on the pitch. Surely now England can do with his composer and passing variation in midfield.
Now Lampard has not had his chance to partner Barry in midfield. People seem to feel Barry is worthy of his place which to be honest is merited with some competent performances. Now seeing Gerrard has blown his chance with what I call very poor performances in his last 4 games whether out of form or incapable of playing his role without any decent alternatives surely Lampard should have his chance to silence his critics. He was wrongly dropped in the first place. There is a saying which goes “YOU ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST GAME” which to be honest, against Germany regardless of the result, Lampard had a top game, scoring a belter of a goal and coming close on 2 other occasions. His all round game that night was good whilst Gerrard’s last 4 games have been below average at best. Give Lampard 4 games alongside Barry to see if he is indeed not worthy or better suited for the position and then make the correct choice.
interestingly, consider that we have the likes of lampard, gerrard, hargreaves, barry. we cannot even qualify says alot about the manager! bye bye stevie McClaren!
i mean why is all thses players who are all in superb for their clubs not doing it the same for england? must be the manager!

you are so so SO wrong
YEAH! Let’s play Lampard and Barry against Croatia…. we’ll get crapped on and that should be the end of McClown and FatFrank forever. Chuck Gary Neville in as well and maybe brother Phil and we can say goodbye to a lot of rancid old cheesers. Fine idea. Save Stevie G from the shit that follows. What a bunch of idiots.
It has to be Gerard/Lampard(attacking midfielder) with Barry/Hargreaves(defensive midfielder). All on top form you would have Gerard and Barry but if either is off form you have great cover in the other two lads. How much easier can it be and what more could you ask for. And if ye are not happy with that then we could change the nationality qualifying rules and find an Irish granny in all 4 and we will happily take them here. Mind I ‘m not sure would they get a game but sure we’d give them a run in some friendly
barry for sure
Has to be Barry. Without other players doing all his work, like it is at club level, Frank is not good enough. That said Scholes is the best man for the job. Shame he retired.
Oi splitter, can’t you get yourself another name instead of using mine?
For the record, I like Barry but I wouldn’t have him in the United side over anyone we’ve got in there currently. Then again, its horses for courses and he’s probably a better fit with Gerrard than anyone else.
call sofia on 0800reverse
lampard is best he is from chelsea
