Two Men Enter, One Man Leaves: Everton’s Moyes vs Liverpool’s Benitez

October 18, 2007

Usually Two Men Enter involves pitting people mano-a-mano in an overall assessment of their abilities, but this week we’re focusing on who will come out on top in the Merseyside Derby this weekend. A battle of tactical nous, blood, guts, and most likely a few sendings off.

Which of these two opposing forces do you prefer? David Moyes, the modest Scotsman with big aims, or Rafa Benitez - whose rotation policy has brought the Champions League to Liverpool.

Moyes, at the helm of what he proclaimed to be “The People’s Club”, has succeeded in transforming Everton from relegation battlers into European challengers, all on a very modest budget (Yakubu excepted), and with some very impressive results, most notably galvanizing his tight unit to get 4th place and a Champions League spot. After his league succcess however, Moyes’ men failed to push on in Europe. But another famous win over their Red rivals could give Everton the boost they need to push on this season.

Benitez, on the other hand, whilst succeeding in Europe has underperformed domestically, continually infuriating fans with his team’s below par Premier League performances. After the shock departure of Pako Ayesteran, can Liverpool , currently in a league slump of sorts, motivate themselves to beat a fired up Everton and provide the impetus to soar up the league.

Both men have shocking grooming habits but whereas Moyes can’t be blamed too much for his natural hair colour (flaming ginger), Rafa’s decision to sport very dodgy facial hair could be seen as a symptom of his side’s poor league form.

Everton and Liverpoo, these two famously old rivals will meet next weekend, but which manager will be the pride of Merseyside. Who do you choose, Benitez or Moyes?

    Freudian slip? Maybe, maybe not.

Anyway. I think that domestically Benitez doesn’t have a clue, whereas Moyes struggles on the continent. Rather than the managers tactical nouse, I would say it is more down to the players on Derby day, who wants it more. I would say that Everton want it more, but then, I would. However, Liverpool are a good team, not quite a great team, but better than us at the moment. All this stands for nothing though, experience tells me not to try and predict the game.

So, taking no heed whatsoever of my own advice, I’m going 2-0 to Everton.

    tight budget !!?!?!

what about beattie and richard wright and andy johnson etc etc

    impressive results ??!!!

moyes chimes in on the eve on every derby about how much liverpool have spent, yet when you look at his spending record and the fact that everton have NEVER been close to so much as a cup quarter final under his “management” how long is he going to live off the fourth place finish (and first round exit). Its a sad fact that moyes and kenwright know all they have to do is get a result in two games a season and they can stay in a job for another year - and flog the toffees a DVD or two…small club…ask wayne rooney

Stabalising a club that was ruined by a redshite, peter.
Liverpool have spent more than most in europe yet you cant win a domestic title, were as we were in a mess financially and battling relegation, now over the pass few years we have challenged for euopean places in a league that get harder every year, yet afetr the millions youve spent and that prem title is still a million miles away.
Wouldnt suprise me if in a few years time you still hadnt won it and we became genuine challengers.
Small club, yeah right, just because you couldnt score against us last year at all we make it our big game, you such an arrogant red it makes me laugh, just jump back on the plane to norway soft lad!

If Liverpool dont want it enough or dont care about the derby then fine - but then they cant expect to win games with that attitude.

Its a massive game for both sides and i think whoever gets the first goal will go on to win it.

Liverpool’s problems are outlined by their poor defence and attack that only seems to come to life when Torres plays. If they dont stick to a regular starting 11 soon, then I can see Liverpool struggling for any sort of consistency.

I think squad rotation will harm Liverpool this weekend and Everton will beat them 1-0.

Moyes - in relative terms. Liv hav won more in the past, and have a better more successful team now. But they are light years away from domestic success, light years. Bitter for red fans.

Everton - success has a more limited definition sadly enuf, but UEFA Group is great for Ev.

This week, I think liv will edge it, but Gerrard shoudlve gone to Chelsea years ago if he wants to win the title - as did half the glory fans!

OK. Firstly WHO has said Liverpool dont care about the Derby ??

Secondly. Poor defence ?? Have you seen the stats so far this season ???

Thirdly. Poor attack ??? Have you seen…..

and Fourth. Dont jump on the band wagon of “rotation” when you obviously (by your previous statement) dont back up your comments by FACT or take a closer look at what your actually saying. Ferguson and Wenger have rotated just as much if not more than Benitez has ever done - look into it.

    ……all BIG clubs
(LFC/man u/Arsenal/Barca/Madrid/Milan) do rotate more than other clubs because we have to try and compete in ALL competions because of who we are, not just survive or “get to a final”.

If Ferguson lost Carrick or Ferdinand,or when Mourinho went without Terry or Lampard, it was a major issue for the manager, but we have been without Agger and Alonso for several games now and Benitez has rarely spoken of the two injuries which i believe are having more of an impact than people think. One is potentially the best centreback Liverpool has had for a very long time and the other is one of the best passers of a ball the kop has seen since Jan Molby.

    and here^s a tip for you……
Due to recent form Liverpools odds have lengthened on them winning the Premiership.

…dont go to the pub this weekend and put your beer money on the men from merseyside to lift the trophy next May…Even if they loose the derby this weekend.

When all players are fit, no-one will get near them and as long as they are still in the race, i would put alot more than beer money on them snatching it from Man u/Arsenal in the last few games of the season when the fresher Liverpool squad keeps going right till the end.

    YNWA.

Thanks for summing up manc ushited fans with that quote. Lescott was poor going forward, but he defended well.

If I were an Everton fan I would also be as jealous as the posters on here and elsewhere. Check out our trophy haul, even when we’re going through a ’struggle’ as it were. Still got 5 Euro cups and 3 Uefa cups. No one else is in sight in this country.

Not even those kiddy fiddler manc shite fans.

That’ll keep us going until the next title win, which is not gonna be long now I’m sure.

It’s funny to see the bitter blue’s getting themselves all excited for part 1 of their yearly cup final.
Beating Liverpool is all that matters to them.
They know they are a small club will very little chance of ever winning trophies again, so they might as well view beating Liverpool as their only achievement in football to be happy about from now on.

I was speaking to a Liverpool fan the other week. He said that Benitez is the greatest manager in the world. Of course, I put the argument to him……… “do you not think he struggles domestically, while admittedly excelling in Europe?” He said, he’s the best manager Liverpool have ever had. I said, “whoah there, are you forgetting Shankly?”

    His reponse………

    “Who?”

    Thats a true stoy that.

if liverpoo are as great and fantastic as you seem to think then why wouldnt everton be joyously happy to beat them you prick - everton want to win every match not just beating your shower of murders….just as they did when they were founder members of the league….we werent small then and you werent even a glint in a fat greedy landlords eye - go and polish your 100000 badges and make sure you dont drop your scarves in the streams piss running down the steps of the welsh kop - a small club couldnt have played all but four years in the top flight - liverpool spent longer in the 2nd division in the 50’s alone than we have in our history

Jonny small johnson - no the fact you disregard that is funny. My grandad told me a story about his mates taking the piss out of him in the 50’s cos he said (as a red fan) that next decade they would be champions,it would just take time.Oh how his everton mates took the piss, i think he said they laughed so much it was hurting them.
Moral of the story, dont be such a narrow minded, arrogant t*at.
Another 3-0 tommorrow for the blues, reds laughed when i said that last year :)
    Clueless joker!
