Two Men Enter; Blackburn Rovers Special - Souness vs Hughes

November 7, 2007

A couple of seasons ago the plucky young manager on the tip of everyone’s tongue was David Moyes but now everyones attention has switched to Mark Hughes, who has successfully converted his playing pedigree to the managerial dugout.
Staying in Lancashire - another playing legend, Scottish firebrand Graeme Souness has been tipped to fill the void at Wigan, and the moans from press and fans alike have been audible all over this Scepter’d Isle. So according to accepted current thinking, Souness’ managerial skills are far far less than the mighty Mark Hughes; or so you would think?
The Times’ stat-meister Bill Edgar disagrees with the perception that Hughes has transformed Blackburn from the grotty shambles that Souness created. In the three seasons that Souness was in charge at Blackburn Rovers Edgar tells us that Blackburn finished sixth, tenth, and fifteenth, exactly mirroring Hughes’ record at Blackburn: sixth, tenth, and fifteenth. And the icing on Edgar’s statistical cake is the fact that Souness brought Blackburn up from the doldrums with instant promotion, and even won the League Cup in 2002. Hughes’ cup record? Three cup semis.
So is Souness really equal (or superior) to Mark Hughes?

Yeah but things were going south under souness and not getting better. He also constantly fell out with the better players in the squad such as David Dunn ,Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke which meant they had to leave. He inherited guys like Dunn and Duff who were on the up but his transfer dealings were ‘mixed’ to say the least , £7m on Corrado Grabbi springs to mind…

Oh come on, is this an actual valid argument? Things were definitely going down hill under Souness, he wasted money, sold our best players and fell out with everyone else. I hope Wigan get someone better than that! Lol Newcastle actually took him off our hands, when Williams was going to sack him anyway! We were not doing well in that season before Hughes arrived, the players were unfit, and morale was at an all time low. This stat bloke Bill Edgar is obviously a bit of a numpty, what other stats does he base his case on? Shouldn’t he be working for The People or The Mirror or another such more reliable newspaper?

Things were on the slide when Souness left, but his overall record makes him one of our best managers.
Promotion and winning a trophy are enough but to qualify for europe by league placing is another massive achievement for a small town club like Rovers.
Spurs have only done it twice since 1983!

Rolling out the Grabbi buy is a smokescreen too…Friedel, MGP, Tugay, Reid, Neill and Emerton have been successes I would say?

Wigan could do far, far worse than Souey.

So true. No-one gives souey his fair share of credit. i’m not gonna waste time by saying we would’ve been better off without losing him but to say he’s completly crap is a bit harsh. never forget the 2000/01 season!

Got something to say?
