Is this the Best Manchester United Team Fergie Has Ever Assembled?

On Saturday it was Liverpool’s captain Stevie G claiming that his team could catch Man Utd and Arsenal, and the day after the runaway mine train of hype continued with Man Utd manager S’Alex Ferg bigged-up his team, claiming that the team he currently has is the best…ever!
After United’s 2-0 win at home to Blackburn, Fergie said:

“I believe this is the strongest squad I’ve ever had. I prefer to see a pool of players emerge and develop into something special, which is what is happening at Old Trafford this season. We have the young players led by Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and they have now been joined by the likes of Carlos Tevez, Nani and Anderson.”

So will the 2007/8 vintage come to be seen as the best United Team ever? Alex Ferguson has created some great teams at Man Utd, ’99, ’94, that one with Clayton Blackmore and Mike Phelan in it. How can you choose your favourite? Is Eric Cantona better than Christiano Ronaldo? Possibly. Is Roy Keane as good as Bryan Robson? Maybe. Is anyone on a par with Mal Donghey? Probably not. They will have to go quite some way to beat the 1999 Treble Team won’t they – is the Lord of the Ferg overdoing the hype a bit?

The Fergster continued:

“In fact, it is difficult to know when to stop when talking about our important players. But this team has to win something. They have a great chance of doing so.”

And that’s the big thing. This team has the potential to match up and even beat the teams of the past, but they haven’t won anything yet. So we say it is the team of ’99 for us, every time. Disagree?
