Wigan won’t be seeing Jewell again
by Josh on November 13th, 2007The whole Wigan manager thing has gone very quite. Paul Jewell looked a dead cert last week, well, not anymore.
Paul Jewell, the former Wigan Athletic manager, has ruled out a return to the Barclays Premier League club.
And that’s according to The Times, they would have no reason to lie to you. Sorry Wigan fans. It just never really looked like happening.
He was approached by Dave Whelan, the owner, over the vacancy after expressing his interest in a newspaper column, but, after a short period to consider his options, decided against a return to the JJB Stadium. It is understand terms between the parties were not discussed.
So where now, Sammy Lee?
Jewell’s decision leaves the Wigan position wide open with the club not thought to have a top target. Joe Royle is the bookmakers’ favourite, with former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness and Steve Cotterill, who surprisingly resigned as manager of Burnley last week, also among the frontrunners.
Well, that doesn’t look too promising. Should never have gone with Hutchings in the first place. Who would want to be a Wigan fan? Maybe a Burnley fan would:
Hutchings, meanwhile, expects to have his payoff from Wigan resolved within the next fortnight and is known to have his eyes on the manager’s job at Burnley.

if we get hutchings, i won’t go to a burnmley match until he is SACKED! we should try for Paul Jewell or Mike Phelan.

In case people don’t Know the majority of Wigan fans did’nt want Jewell back, ideed quite a large number were prepared to burn their season tickets if he returned. He produced the high ball to Heskey for most of last season and presented us with the dire (if you can call it.)fotball ever played at The JJB.He moaned about the crowd sizes, about us not attracting top class players, and all this after we had resurected him from Sheffield Wednesday, A lot of the panic signings are still with us,one striker is yet to score his first goal for us after 9 months……………

Just read a rumor that Paul Ince is the latest person linked with the job. His MK Dons side is top of the table in league two, and he could be contesting for it. Might be risky if he takes it and fails…as opposed to taking MK Dons to league one, then championship then line up a job in the EPL.
Paul Ince talked about not getting a consideration with the top flight teams because of the chairmen. Gareth Southgate gets appointed boss of boro not out of merit, but out of reputation as a player.
If he becomes the wigan coach, does this make it the 4th former player who played under alex ferguson who also became a coach in the top flight? It’s the same pattern of former liverpool players in the 80s who moved on to coaching in the 90s.
There would be Mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, Roy Keane and perhaps Paul Ince. If west brom return next season it could be five with bryan robson. Or is he at sheffield united now?
