Two Men Enter: Everton’s Lescott VS Reading’s Shorey

November 14, 2007

Two Men Enter is an opportunity to put two players together head-to-head, in an eyeball to eyeball battle for supremacy - and then it is over to you to pick the winner. Today’s pugilists? England hopefuls Joleon Lescott and Nicky Shorey.

This one has been made even more contentious by the fact that Reading’s left back Nicky Shorey has had a pop at England manager Steve McClaren. Shorey said of his past experiences with the England side:

“I didn’t get a chance in Russia and I was gutted. The manager had called up two left-backs for those games against Estonia and Russia and when one gets injured, you would think the other is going to play. But for whatever reason the manager decided to go with someone else. It was only the day before the game that I had an idea I might not start. I had played against Brazil and Germany in my two previous games and thought I had done well for him. So to be left out was upsetting. But I’m not bitter about it.”

Shorey then turned his attention towards Joleon Lescott and claimed that he thinks the Everton player ‘did quite well’ - surely damning him with faint praise! Shorey continued:

“Lescott has played left-back for Everton in the past so it’s not a foreign position to him and I thought he did quite well. It was just a decision the manager had to make and the disappointment will drive me on.”

So who do you think is more fit for the England left back berth, Lescott is a supreme centreback and has been successfully shunted over to the left back slot at Everton, but is he better than born and bred left back Nicky Shorey?

Shorey isn’t a patch on Lescott defensively or going forward. Left back isn’t even Lescott’s position & he is still much better than Shorey.

Playing Lescott at lb vs Russia has cost England, they won’t qualify now. Lescott is a centre back and was drawn into the centre too often.

Caught out defensively and hopefully it will cost McClown his job.

    Shorey by a mile - he’s class

  4. Follow, follow, follow, Everton are the team to follow...there is nobody better than Jolean Lescott, hes the best toffee defender we know....

Jolean Lescott - absolutely no doubt. Shorey is weaker, slower, worse going forward as Lescott has shown in recent games, has a weaker header, and a weaker tackle. You would have to be mad to pick Shorey over Lescott.

Bill, as always, try taking your red glasses off before making a comment.

Badger, Lescott was abviously told to tuck in at left back against Russia as Richards did at right back. The was the managers decision, not being cuaght out of postition. Agreed that McClaren has to go.

Lescott never gets drawnin at left back playing for Everton, and he gets down the line frequently, causing the oposition right all sorts of problems.

It was obvious to Everotnians that Lescott was asked to play left back in a certain way for England and it failed.

Give Lescott free run at left back and you’ll see his true quality.

Saying all this, he has actually made one or two mistakes at centre back this season which just did not happen at all last year.

He is best played next to a talking centre back. An organiser. Lescott would then make Rio Ferdinand look like the over-rated blurt that he is.

lescott is better but not at left back shorey is better in that position. and shorey has a much cross than lescott! u dont need a left back to head the ball either when u have richards terry and ferdinand goin forward for corners!

all the everton fans bein a bit bias! shorey is a better left back! lescott is a better player!

Lescott is a fantastic defender and room should be found in the England team for him wherever.
I would play him at Centre Back with Leighton Baines at left back. He is better there than Shorey.

I can’t believe that you think a make shift left-back is better than a full time one!!!
Comments like these are from IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW WHO NICKY SHOREY IS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM PLAY!!!
When you have watched him develop over the last 5 years into England’s second best left-back you wonder what was going through Maclaren’s mind when he picked Lescott for the Russia game. Air as usual I suspect!!!!!

He does that terrible backwards diving though - and that alone could be enough to see England out of the competition.
Red glasses? I think you’re mistaking me for Timmy Mallett.
I take your point… but I was a big Shorey fan last season, and although Reading have been found out a bit this season, Shorey is still playing really well.

Shorey would be a more effective left back than Lescott for england as to me he is similar to Ashley Cole in his style (just a litle slower) so does not interfere with the style of play england is used to.

baines is a better left back than the both of them.

Got something to say?
