Manchester United just can’t get enough Portuguese midfielders

Posted by

First Ronaldo, then Nani and now… a new Portuguese midfielder we haven’t heard of but will probably turn out to be the best player in the world. And it has pricked up Fergie’s attention, or at least his brother’s. Let The Guardian explain:

Sir Alex Ferguson is strongly considering adding to the Portuguese contingent at Manchester United by making a transfer-window move for Miguel Veloso, Sporting Lisbon’s impressive young midfielder.

Ferguson, taking the advice of his assistant Carlos Queiroz, has identified Veloso as the next potential star to emerge from the Sporting youth ranks that also produced Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani. Veloso, who has broken into the Portuguese national side at 21, has been the outstanding player in La Liga this season and it is a measure of United’s interest that Ferguson’s brother Martin, the club’s chief scout, has been a virtual ever-present recently at the Estadio Jose Alvalade XI.

Skipping over the fact that that sounds considerably like jobs for the boys, do Man United really need this young holding midifelder? They already have Hargreaves, Carrick and if pushed Anderson and indeed Scholes these days. Is Fergie just buying up these good young Portuguese players before anyone else can? Or is this the end for Michael Carrick’s Man Utd career? A trip back to Spurs for the sideways passing midfielder wouldn’t surprise many people.
