Despite apparent unrest in the Newcastle dressing room as reported in the Times, Sam Allardyce is only third-favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Premier League manager to leave his club.
After a resounding 3-1 win against former club Bolton on the opening day of the season, it appeared that virtually every Magpies fan was behind the manager. A 1-0 defeat at Derby in September signalled the end of the honeymoon for Fat Sam, although with the board’s apparent backing, he might last at least a few games longer than some of his counterparts.
The bookies certainly think so, with Skybet making Gareth Southgate their 2/1 favourite to be out of a job first. Are the vultures circling above the young Middlesbrough manager’s head? According to the Evening Gazette:
“I don’t think I’m bullet proof in that I don’t need to get results. I know I need to get results and I know what needs to improve to get those results.”
There’s no question that the former Villa defender is beginning to feel the heat. And what of Mr Angry of Anfield? Will he calm down in time to smooth things over with the club’s new owners. Rafa Benitez is just 3/1 to win the next Sack Race, joining Messrs Hutchings, Davies, Mourinho and Jol on the scrapheap. If Liverpool fail to make the Champions League knockout stages, the American duo will have a valid excuse to tell the fans.
Fulham did their usual trick of tossing away a well-earned lead not once but twice against Blackburn. Even so, it’s hard to imagine Lawrie Sanchez being the first to walk the plank at 7/1, give the trio ahead of him in the betting. The former Northern Ireland manager did well to save Fulham from a potential relegation last term and his team are one of the leaders when it comes to first-half performance!
