TWO MEN ENTER: Cantona VS Ronaldo - Who is the best Manchester United genius?

November 29, 2007

Two Men Enter is an opportunity to put two players together head-to-head, in an eyeball to eyeball battle for supremacy - and then it is over to you to pick the winner. Today’s pugilists? Manchester United Legend Eric Cantona and upstart skillster Christiano Ronaldo.

The Independent’s Ian Herbert today compares two of S’Alex Ferguson’s greatest loves, Eric Cantona and Christiano Ronaldo. Despite celebrating Cantona’s erect-collar and insouciant swagger, it turns out that Fergie has forgotten about his maverick French genius, and is currently intoxicated by the skillful fumes of Christiano Ronaldo. Introducing the latest in a long line of Christiano Ronaldo DVD’s The Lord Of The Ferg said:

“I’ve had some great players here over the years – Bryan Robson and Roy Keane, but in terms of sheer ability and imagination, Cristiano is, without doubt, looking the best now.”

…And with that declaration the teary moans of former United greats from Keane to Cantona - via Beckham and Robson - were heard throughout the land.
So is Ronaldo really better than Cantona - and isn’t Sir Alex jumping the gun a bit with this Ronaldo love-fest?

No way. Cantona was brilliant for years, Cronaldo can be amazing and was easily the best player in England last season, but he’ll need a few more seasons like that to even be considered.

Plus, I highly doubt he’d have the balls to kick a fan for giving him shit.

cantona reigns supreme. cristiano can match him for ability but cantona’s brain was far superior to any of his peers at the time. He did the simple things exceptionaly well. His positional sense was second 2 none and He scored freely from assists from giggs from the wings with timely runs into the box. He sent the keeper the wrong way every time He hit a penalty (except once, but still scored).
He was also capable of the extraordinary. unbelievable goals vs wimbeldon, sheffield united, sunderland, liverpool, qpr…….
    Long Live THE King!!

Ronaldo certainly is the best ball juggler the pull on the utd jersey but he doesn’t have the vision of Rooney or scholes, let alone Cantona! It isn’t just about finding a man with his final ball, it’s about finding the right man and doing the right things with the ball everytime - Ronaldo comes up short in this department. Talent does what it can, genius (Cantona) does what he must :-)

Agreed Watching Ronaldo he seems very wasteful and frustrating at times. He gets alot of plaudits but i think players like scholes and Cantona were more important

I’m not sure if SAF gave that comment enough thought before uttering it. I would agree with Spindle and Steve, all too often Ronaldo plays the “look at me” game and all to often it comes to nothing. There is more than being able to do tricks to being a genius.

  7. Brady Better Than Ron

Cantona had heart, guts and skill, - and a great flying drop-kick into the crowd. Ronnie is a diving show-pony ball juggling tosser, Brady better than both

i believe at Ronaldo’s current ability, Cantona is better, he had quality and his arragence made him look different class. But potentially if Ronaldo is this great now , so how good will he be at his peak?

In a few years ronaldo will be, because he hasnt gone to full potential yet.
Cantona will always be a legend at Man United.

It’s obvious that SAF is trying to set higher standards for Ronaldo to improve his performances and get the most out of the player, both on the field and the number of years Ron will stay at UTD.

i believe each player has their own special abilities in their own aspect of the game. but wad makes a great player, is how a player utilises his skills at the right time in a match, thus winning matches for their team. so to each player his best, during their time. Pele was the best during his time, Maradona was God-like during his time. Meaning to say, we can’t really compare Cantona with C.Ronaldo…they are both worlds apart. then again, both are special and gifted players in their own ways in a different timeline.

Got something to say?
