Idiot Of The Week: Manchester City’s Red Card Goon, The Liverpool and Chelsea Referees, and Rafa Benitez.

Each week we’ll be picking some nominees for Idiot Of The Week. Maybe they locked themselves in the toilet rather than watch the last ten minutes of a game, maybe they were photographed with vegetable in their bottom or maybe they’re just your team’s crappest footballer. Whatever the reason, here are our picks and we want to hear yours in the comments.

Idiot A: Stephen Ireland. You’re away to Tottenham, surely a three point banker – but Man City’s Stephen Ireland decided to end Man City’s push for victory on ’82 minutes, getting himself sent off for a rotten a two-footed lunge on Young-Pyo Lee. Normally Ireland likes to fake illness and pull his pants down but his red card was sheer cretinous idiocy. His sending off was compounded by a Defoe winner seconds after. Idiot.

Idiot B: Ref Andre Marriner – The first of two wallies who committed possibly the worst gaffe in a Referee’s arsenal – giving a soft penalty – In this case it was Jamie Carragher who was penalized, for felling Reading’s Gunnarsson (well outside the box).

Idiot C: Rafa Benitez – For accepting defeat against Reading and withdrawing Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher for the last half hour , c’mon mate, it’s not as if Reading away is a game that Liverpool should be accepting a loss in, although Idiot B did help.

Idiot D: Peter Walton – For adding to ‘wrong penalty mania’ this weekend and giving the softest of penalties, after Sunderland’s Danny Higginbotham had supposedly tugged at Chelsea star Alex’s shirt.
