For Liverpool, losing is bad, losing to United is worse, and losing to United to see themselves sit in 5th is even worse. But Rafa Benitez is keeping perspective ahead of his crunch meeting with the club’s American owners,
“It is too soon to talk about the title,” he said.
“Clearly, it will be harder. If we are going to get closer we need to start winning some games in a row.
“Every team can lose points, so I have the same confidence to keep going and try and keep winning.
“We are a team that has a lot of positives but this defeat is frustrating because we are very close to Manchester United. We just made one mistake and paid for it, just as we did last season.”
Rafa is right, of course. It’s far too early to start saying any of the usual suspects are out of the title race. The problem though is that Liverpool have found themselves in this situation more often than not under Benitez and never recovered to mount a serious title challenge.
So is there a reason to be more optimistic this season than any other?
