Tottenham Hotspur - perennial underachievers?
by Dexter on December 29th, 2007In yet another of Times statto Bill Edgar’s “Top 50 Stats of 2007″, statmeister Edgar gives us an insight into Tottenham’s perennial mediocrity for the past 3 decades. Edgar writes:
“In the past 35 seasons, Tottenham Hotspur have never finished closer than 13 points from the top of the table, even though there were only two points for a win in the first nine of those seasons (when gaps in the table, naturally, tended to be smaller).”
Tepid mediocrity seems to be the badge of the entire Tottenham tribe, but will Ramos - with his fitness regimen and tactical nous be able to pull Tottenham’s socks up or will the 35 season statistic keep on growing?…

you can’t argue with facts. what would be interesting to know is how many of those seasons the spurs fans declared ‘this is the year - top four for sure’. 25? 26?

Hey a lot of you fans have had a go at us lot, for God knows what for? it is not like we are local rivals. Great underachievers, got something in common there then. I’m fed up with the same top four that has developed since our fall. I am watching clubs like yourselves to try and get a bigger picture to what is happening in our game, because you should be up. there. This is not about where you come from, but about the board you have, money which is spent, manager you have, and of course the fan base to back it up. Unless Chelsea is running at an extravigant loss. Then it should not be there, the success and great football does not seem to have taken the London Man U suppoters away, and I suppose it will take decades for them to achieve a fan bse like yourseleves, never mind us.

Saw some more rubbish from some of your fans, we do not even get this from the Sunderland fans, which would be accepted, and expected. Some have even slagged off the whole of the northeast, which is worrying. I live down here now, freezing my bollocks off, because if you have not noticed we live on a cold Island. If football is played in the biggest capital in world then watch out for Paris St Germain. Southern French teams will do well then. If the weather effects the foootball stars so much, then how come the Bundesliga is so strong. Where Keegan left to play for Bayern, from mighty Liverpool. Speaking of living down here, got great Totenham fans as friends. We remember when in the 70’s poor old Newcastle did not have a good chairman, and we sold the likes of Gazza. You have a great team, I will not stoop as low as these sad loney perfetic people.

Only 13 points that not a bad effort from the Yids. Although its easy to see where it has all gone wrong for us over the years. A plethera of poor managers (Christian Gross, Trevor Francis, Glen Hoddle, David Pleat and so on and so on. George Graham was the only manager who stood out but being a gooner his days were always numbered. Venebales was a good man for us but fell out with Sugar. It wasnt until Jol came along that things started to turn the corner. And the other aguement is having a board that support the club and its aims. Sugar did what he needed to give us back a club but didn’t have the footballling genius to take it to the next level, Levy is dedicated but his actions have led to the usual wobble that happens in the spurs board room. Spurs have it all there but a bloody good board goes hand in hand with a mangers ambitions. Hopefully now all the Jol who ha has died down Ramos can get on with the job. Don’t write us off just yet, anyway there is always the 36th season!!!

Bobby Mongcur, Keegan went to Hamburg, up in the cold north rather than Bayern in the warm south. You truly are Bobby Mongcur.
