Moyes: We played the football, Arsenal just hoofed it!
by Dexter on December 30th, 2007It was Everton’s chance to attempt to get a victory against one of the “Big Four” yesterday, but after scoring in early through Cahill, Arsenal cured their first-half drought after a half-time chat from their rainmaker Arsene Wenger - and proceeded to smash four past the hapless Toffees. Somewhere is the breakneck second period, there was time for Bendtner and Arteta to get sent off too!
After the game Moyes was still hugely positive after the game, he said:
“What impressed me was the way we played. I thought we played very well and I thought we were better than Arsenal.
“It’s incredible we’ve lost 4-1. We gave Arsenal a really tough game and I thought the better team lost.“It was Everton who passed the ball and tried to score good goals and it was Arsenal who scored off long balls.”
So do you agree with Moyes, did Everton deserve to get three points from this encounter?

Hornchurch Gooner - December 30th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Moyes always has a lot to say but rarely is it worth listening to. He has Fergies attitude but no track record. If he has been at a big club he would have been sacked by now. Flatters to decieve.
cesco - December 30th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Moyes is a twat , arsenal had four shots on target and scored 4 goals, how many times last season did arsenal outplay teams and ended up losing or drawing, arsenal did not have to move out of 2nd gear to win while everton played probably their best game of the season.
Its so funny that fabregas had a arm in his face and is called a cheat but when phil neville and yakubu dived they slipped . Everton are playing well but true quality comes out in the end. When arsenal are playing thier brand of football everyone says arsenal have no plan b, then when we show our plan b, we are long ball merchants. 3points is 3 points, i wish they come and play like that at the emirates because they will get battered.
reezal77 - December 30th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
What a sore looser Moyes is. How can Everton be the better team with that kind of defense? Look at how Arsenal survived those bombardment. Arsenal have got better defenders and strikers… Arsenal were the better team and will always be!!!
CV - December 30th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
Everton have improved massively but at the end of the day for them to make the step up they need their manager to STFU as he is prone to spouting rubbish.
Arsenal for all of Evertons suppossed dominance were rarely threatened, how many saves did Almunia make from both set and open plays? That showed that the home team should have tested the Arsenal defence if they intended to win outright, as it is their goal came from an error/setplay.
Arsenal won by bypassing the packed Everton midfield, and as far as I know there are no rules against crossfield balls and clinical finishing…now that is definitely not ‘hoofing’
Rupert Coghlan - December 30th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
I think Arsenal (and Everton) fans need to look at things in context here - considering Arsenal are meant to be the cutting edge of passing football and its all we ever hear about, you were out-passed, out-thought and out-manouevered…for the first half.
Second half you took your chances, capitalising on our errors and defended well. The sparkly football only came out in spells however. What was sad to see from Arsenal was the gamesmanship, handballing, referee back-slapping and chatting up, dirty challenges, diving and overreacting (Eduardo spent 5 minutes getting treatment for literally nothing as tv replays showed)
Yes Phil Neville dived, and yes it was a shocker but that was all - Yak didnt dive, he bumped into Toure and fell over. It was worth an appeal but no dive.
I have no problem how Arsenal won with long balls - fair play for mixing it up and capitalising - I am however pleased that this is a style of play that Everton are looking to move on from. 4-1 did flatter Arsenal, and they know it.
amu - December 30th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
AW is in this match showing he can play other teams at their own game.
Let’s hope he doesn’t ask the player to pass to an etenity with so many defenders around.
Anyway Moyes must know the name of the game is how many goals you score.
As one gunner rightly pointed out,the gunners in other games had so many shots at goal. The oppositin had two shots and score.
You tell me which is the better team.
cesco - December 30th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Rupert 4-1 did not flatter us we had 4 shots on target and scored 4 goals you scored your goal from a corner. that shows we were clinical, almunia wasn,t making last ditch saves, it wasn,t a day for arsenal to play good football, it was a day to get the three points get on the bus and prepare for west ham at home, simple we didn’t even get out of 1st gear.
Rupert Coghlan - December 30th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Four goals - well done.
1 was well taken yes, 1 was a deliberate handball, 1 was a defensive balls up and the other was immaterial. I’m sure at half time you weren’t thinking you were cruising in first gear……or were you? So far there hasn’t been one Arsenal fan with a bit of reality or context I have come across.

ha ha moyes is as deluded as ferguson when it comes to losing.
take the high road my son!
its grrrreat to be a gooner!
Anonymous - December 30th, 2007 at 3:05 pm
some of what should scare the rest of the premiership is the follwoing: arsenal scored 4 without being anywhere near their best; fabregas will have better days; van persie will return; eduardo is lethal now that he is getting used to English football/weather; almunia look settled and stable; after winter comes spring - pitches will dry, sun will shine, we will pass it better; Man U are not the feared 3 point machine; wenger will pull out a surprise Jan signing to further strenghten the side..
iceycalm - December 30th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
who cares what moyes thinks? arsenal weren’t playing well and won 4-1.
evertons goal was a defensive balls up also rupert.
man united didn’t play well against a lesser team, also away, and were beaten 2-1.
this just shows the strength of the team. this young team that were written off by almost as many people as are now heaping praise on them. and its justified too. we can’t play the best football of the free world all of the time, but we can win when we’re not.
ewan - December 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
Arsenal have been jaded for the last 5 games now. They have played way too many games. Even Everton felt the strain of 2 big games in a row. In the 2nd half , they could not recover. Arsenal was very fortunate to have won. Gamesmanship these days win games, sad, but a fact. Just look at how many games MU have won by their divers.
Anthony manuel Ubiz - December 30th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
I refer to RC” s comments. He is obviously an Everton or anti Arsenal fan.Actually
goals can come come anywhere be it pressure on the defenders, goalkeeper’s mistakes, etc. You may dominate a game for 98% of the time but if you don’t score you dont’ win especialy if the other team has one shot and it goes in,
The most famous one was the 1999 cl final BM shd have won but as we know what happened in the end.Since the we know what has happened to Mu in the years after. They aint so lucky.
goonas rojas - December 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
well, Moyes, you just saw arsenal’s plan B … for the past 3/4 seasons, we have encountered teams (including everton) who come at us with very physical play, parked defenses and long balls .. we generally end up such games having 70% of clinical and eye-pleasing football, but end up drawing or losing .. typically, famous pundits and the press would say ‘u will win nothing playing pretty football’ …
We want this title, and if adjusting to playing teams at their game is the way, that is indeed excellent .. I am sure if we had gone direct/route-1 against pompey or boro we would certainly have won those matches. Lets now see teams both play high-line packed defences, and defend well from punts deep into their eighteen ..
The future is red .. the future is arsenal (TM) …
Moyes should STFU, and focus on getting the best out of his team that has punched above their weight all season … yes, everton has been impressive and played a great first half, but we thoroughly deserved to win the match on pure quality (not effort), hence its tempting to accept the claim by another gooner posting above that ‘we barely got out first gear’ …
Tommy - December 30th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
Im dissapointed we lost but they scored FOUR and we scored one and thats what counts.
I love Davey Moyes and I know he will learn a lot from this game and we will get better.
Thanks for this lesson.
LB - December 30th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
The things Arsenal are criticised for are unbelievable. Arsenal played Blackburn and each time a foul was called against Blackburn, they surrounded the ref and made sure he knew they didn’t agree. Chelsea and Man U are the same. Then Yakubu dives and asks for a penalty. Neville dives. What do we hear? How Fabregas is a cheat. You English need to look at yourselves in the mirror because to us you look like bigots for these stupid things you say. For every comment about Fabregas, you need to say the same about Rooney, Gerrard, Savage, etc., and they are all divers.
cesco - December 30th, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Rupert, arsenal are always stronger in the 2nd half than the first, the only threat i felt coming from everton was set-pieces, everton played well but the point i am trying to make is that arsenal didn’t have to play well. and won convingcinly.
Everton are doing well and progressing.
Davo - December 30th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
Why are people talking about Everton’s physical approach? You are all off you rockers. Everton played the football and any dirty tackling came from Arsenal.
Blue Nose - December 30th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
haha tommy ur a bad fuckin idiot yano fuck everton wer cheated fabregas is a fuckin little shitouse ther was no need what so ever 2 roll round on the floor like that arsenal wer outplayed by a team outside the big 4 that just shows how close everton r to the big 4 give us 2 seasons n yas will see champs league football at goodison
Jack - December 30th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
ehh, u people…everton fans lol…..so what if u play football…at the end of the day its 3 points that matters. its like last time…arsenal playing good football and lost….these things happens in football so get over it.
Everton in champions league..sry fren, long way to go.

Sour grapes! Moyes is a &@*!!@^! sore looser so is Cahill! SHUT UP!!
Moyes fails mentioning Ms. Neville’s and Arteta’s spectacular dives that should have been rewarded yellow cards!

That’s just brilliant. Sure, Everton were the better team and played Arsenal out of the park while managing to lose by just a measly three goals. I’ll admit that I was a bit surprised after the final whistle but you can’t argue with the result. The “better team” cannot be the one that manages to concede four easy goals in 45 minutes.
As for there being no need to roll around the pitch after being elbowed, I’d argue that there is no need to use your hands in a game of footy, unless you’re the keeper. And be sure to look into that slippery pitch of yours. Wouldn’t want any of your classy players injuring themselves with their pirouettes and grande jetés.

well arsenal can win these matches but will never keep the media or the arsenal hating lot quiet. play nice football and draw/lose we become a bunch of southern softies “who dont like it up em ” and scrap and win 4-1 we are not playing “nice enough “.hypocrites
Valentin - December 30th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Moyes has absolutely no grace in defeat.
In previous years when Arsenal was beaten by Everton, Moyes kept saying that scoring was more important that pretty play.
This year, he lost and he is now complaining about playing the better football.
Everton conceded 4 goals, because when under pressure their defense collapsed.
Being out-numbered in midfield, Arsenal decided to change tactic and by-pass the midfield with long balls (precise long ball not just hopeful punt). That put more pressure on the defense which showed its limits.
If you analyse Everton game against big team, It is always the same. Whenever its defense is put under pressure, they panick and concede.
Moyes can then claim it was due to some individual defender mistake, but defender ’s mistake are part of the game. Arsenal defenders did not make those mistakes and that’s why Arsenal did not concede when Everton was in the ascendency.
The four best defense of the Premiership are Mancheter United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal.
That’s because they have the best defenders.
Andymac - December 30th, 2007 at 10:31 pm
I posted here a few days before the game, and predicted that a lot of people would be surprised by the quality of football played by Everton (Arsenne Wenger excluded), and that we would give them a game without “parking the bus”. Well, we did that alright! Hat’s off to Wenger that he realised at half time that the “unthinkable” was happening - Everton fought toe to toe in a passing game, and were on top. Like the brilliant coach he is, he changed his tactics to a more “long ball” game - no disrespect intended here - he got his “plan b” spot on.
In the “heat of the battle” I got a bit wound up by the ref missing the obvious handball for Arsenal’s first goal, and, I’m sorry, but Fabrigas (fantastic player whom I admire) did put on the dramatics to get Arteta sent off instead of a more correct yellow card, but Arsenal will be Champions this season, to my mind. How they reacted to being initially outplayed confirms it. Well done.
I still fancy us to learn from the lessons when we meet you at Wembley in the Carling, though - THATS why Moyes is being so upbeat after the defeat, I have no doubt.
Salut, Gunners. ’till we meet again.
Bob_Bobson - December 30th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
Gotta agree with Indian Gooner here - either you accept you lost (however it was done) or you acknowledge the Arsenal when we do play our sublime styles
I’ve come to the conclusion (probably way behind the times here…) that the managers really just whinge whatever the result
can’t have it both ways guys
Everton, for me, are easily amongst the best of the rest (Man City, Villa & Pompey round it out) so it’s disappointing to see a manager like Moyes who i have a lot of respect for (remember when Rooney leaving was meant to relegate them?) goes & throws the toys outta the pram
anyways, up the Gunners & happy new year!

A team has 90mins to win a game, Evron were awful in the 2nd half, would hav lost by more had rocky and ade been on sooner.
Blue nose closer to the big4 CL trophy, oh dear, you lost to Pool, arsenal and ManU, probably Chelsea (can’t remember), I don’t think you will even finish top6 in the end, Pool will beat you again You are to Pool what Spurs are to Arsenal, a poor second.

cheated against liverpool, threw both utd games away in last min, drew with chelsea, only been beaten convincingly by arsenal but that was more to do with are selves(shocking defending) than arsenal
lepaker - December 31st, 2007 at 2:44 am
Cesc Fabregas is a cheat and a massive cheat. No matter what arsenal fans can say, i saw it with my eyes. Arteta had the ball and had no intention of hitting Fab. His eyes were on the ball. Fab is a cheat and a cheat and its simple as that. In fact, I really thought I liked arsenal’s football until that game against everton. Arsenal were simply a bunch of cheats. They physically beat up teams (just look at the number of yellow cards they received — and everton got none). And clearly, arsenal (who just broke John terry’s legs a few weeks ago), yet again tried to break legs and stop football from being played. And then the cheat Fab does his thing again. He is no different from the diving Ronaldo and other divers. just a bunch of cheats. I had wanted arsenal to win the title but after watching them play against everton, clearly they DO NOT deserve it… A curse to Fabregas…
LouGooner - December 31st, 2007 at 8:58 am
lepaker, have you ever received a smack in the face? how many times have you seen Arteta with his arms held out the way he does? Fab is not the first to receive his greeting! have you ever played football? you do not need to look at a player to know exactly where he is! as for your attack on AFC, just because EFC play ‘football’ in one game does not excuse their attitude in many other games! Do you think we really care whether you want us to win or not?! Robbie Savage never cheats? Michael Owen didn’t dive against Argentina nearly 10 years ago? John Terry didn’t try to bite off Louis Boa-Morte’s thumb a few weeks ago?
Get back into your blinkered pit!
IF AFC are leg breakers and stop football being played what does it say about all the others, apart from MUFC?
your comments embarrass you! COME ON THE ARSENAL!

Arteta is a good player but indeed he deserved to be sent off for his elbow on FAB. It is not important whether this was intentional or not. The fact is he caught him. Bendtner deserved a red card for his challenge on JOHNSON.
Moyes though sounds like FERGIE. Does not always think before opening up his mouth.
ARSENAL do not have a monopoly to play attractive football hence if they mix it up opposing managers should not be complaining.
The message from ARSENAL is loud and clear, whatever you do we can do it better!!!
mira - January 2nd, 2008 at 1:47 am
Even to raise your arm to shield the ball from the opposition challenge, don’t you wonder why arterta have to raise his arm over his shoulder? Raising your arm over your shoulder almost always end up your elbow/arms in other’s player face, he should have known that and did it a few times.
