Arsenal were a bit lucky to get by Burnley, apparently
by Dexter on January 7th, 2008Arsene Wenger yesterday admitted that his side were lucky to scrape through to the FA Cup fourth round after staggering to a victory against Burnley. Goals from Eduardo and Bendtner pulled the Gunners out of the mire and after the game Burnley gaffer Owen Coyle said:
“That was a compliment coming from someone like Arsene.
“He came to me and said they’d got a bit lucky there and that we’d passed and moved the ball well. That’s a measure of him as he didn’t have to say that.
“When someone of his stature says something like that you have to use it and take it forward. That’s what we’re looking to do.”
And Wenger himself uncorcked some bubbling praise and drizzled it over Burnley, Wenger said:
“I’m surprised to see where they are in the Championship — maybe it’s better to be in the Premier League. This division must be very difficult!
“They had a good early chance and if they had got the first goal it could have had a big impact on the game.”
So it looks like for now Arsenal have stopped winning comfortably and turned on the luck, which may be the last piece of the puzzle to bring a couple of trophies back to north London.

Arsenal have ridden their luck many times this season.
UTD’s pedigree will prove too much for the arses pretenders
Steve - January 7th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Jon
See the question where it says “Got Something To Say?” Well you obviously haven’t so why bother?
HighburyJD - January 7th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
yeah well done jon - genius post
enjoy yr pedigree chum
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Steve, maybe I should have drawn a picture for you! Most people who can read will see i did make a point.
The fact is you have rode your luck many times this season, drawing and winning games you should have lost. Fact.
And highburytit, that was witty. Avoiding the truth with some wit.
wandarah - January 7th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
It seems Man Uniteds luck is personified in Rooney and Ronaldo though, doesnt it.
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
wandarah, the last time I looked they were our players and not fairy godmothers.
How many games has Cesc bailed you out? Or is that different!
Steve - January 7th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Jon
I can read………..better than you can write obviously………the word is RIDDEN not rode! Also could you be specific about where we’ve RIDDEN our luck? Scoring a goal when a player is down injured, whilst being battered at home by Birmingham, now THAT’S what i’d call lucky.
Michael Barnes - January 7th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
jon
Haven’t you got enough manure sites.
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Sorry about the grammer Steve I wasn’t aware that you were a teacher.
Now either you just listen to hype or you watch your team, if it’s the latter then I’m sure I don’t need to remind you of anything.
If you are a typical arse supporter that cannot take criticism because your team is always the ‘bestest’ then thats fine too.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Hey Jon, manure are cheating scumbags.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Hey Jon, Man U cheat
shedzy - January 7th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
united have had some relly bad luck this year, didnt they conced a penalty at old trafford for the first time since 1993, or did i imagine that
united fans claiming that arsenal are lucky - look in the mirror, you fckng pointless prick.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Hey Jon, Arsenal are really good and don’t have to resort to cheating quite as much as man u and chelsea do.
wandarah - January 7th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
That IS different Jon!
For example, Rooney and Ronaldo are both horrible cunts. Cesc however, is a beautiful man, a veritable angel of purity.
Steve - January 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Grammer??? Is English not your first language?? Maybe you’re one of the tourists that flock to your ground fortnightly and about which your manager has been so scathing.
I can take criticism of my team when it’s well thought out and justified and not just a product of 3rd form “my team is better than your team” thinking. Still waiting for you to justify your original remark but not holding my breath
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Oh ok, so Cesc going down clutching his face like he was shot and getting a player sent off wasn’t cheating?
Diving in the box to get penalties isn’t cheating? How many yellows you got this season for faking it?
Wake up.
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Steve, you are a typical arse fan obviously.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Jon, you are an all-too-typical manc fan
wandarah - January 7th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Jon, you must understand. Cesc is a delicate flower, a beautiful creature. Even the slightest bump can bruise the magnificent man. Surely it is an offense against humanity AND god for a horrible drooling savage like Ashley cole to lay a finger on him.
As for yellows for ‘faking penalties’. None?
Gabriela Sabatini - January 7th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
You guys are really stupid - you should watch me play, give yourselves something to smile about - and maybe get an erection or two
Steve - January 7th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Yes Jon fortunately I am, and you old chum are a typical myopic manc for whom thinking seems to be a bit of s tough challenge. The greatest event in your history was a plane crash, but thanks for having such a keen interest in my team!
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
Top notch comment from Steve. Jon, got anything to come back with? It’s unlikely to be even slightly witty …. but let’s not pre-judge
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
so wandarah you don’t read any other Arsenal bloggs where your own fans say they don’t like your players diving.
Ever heard of eboue?
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Marzipan and Steve, how about Villa, Spurs and the Utd match just for starters.
Go read some reports then come back to me just in case you missed the matches
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Nice rejoinder Jon, Eboue is indeed a dirty diving fraudster. Steve, can you match Jon’s astute noticism?
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Steve, thanks for mentioning the plane crash, just the sort of class I would expect from a supporter of a team that has none.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
oooh hang about he’s throwing in some actual examples using team names…. I’ll get back to you when I’ve watched the whole of the game between Villa, Spurs and Utd. I’ve never seen 3 teams play each other at once. Was that a multiball match Jon?
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Wow, 3 teams and a plane crash!!! That really must have been Match of the Day….
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Shame there aren’t any scouser or Leeds fans on this blogg, you could have a relly good time taking the piss out of people dying…prats!
Reaper, G. - January 7th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I can take the piss out of all of you
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Yeah, Jon, or Iraqis…. prats!
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Marzipan, you are obviously one of the prats that can’t do a minute’s silence when there is one. I’m sure the majority of your fellow supporters are really glad you are one of their compatriots
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
how did you deduce that, Jon, you thicko?
Eujen - January 7th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
this is one of the best quotes ive ever heard.it made me lol.
“Cesc is a delicate flower, a beautiful creature. Even the slightest bump can bruise the magnificent man. Surely it is an offense against humanity AND god for a horrible drooling savage like Ashley cole to lay a finger on him.”
dw Jon you’re still entitled to your own opinion. Hang on to it.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
meaning you’re very much mistaken you thick idiot manc
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
oh, and look up compatriot as well, my God you’re stupid.
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
piss of marzipan, go dance on your nans grave or do something that really excites you.
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Eujen, I must admit that quote was good! When you look at it that way I suppose you can understand the pain he must have been in!
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Jon the penis, that’s not a very nice thing to say is it?
cemos - January 7th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Jon let’s talk about luck ok . Luck follows the best mate, when a team wins the title you need luck. Don’t tell me MU wasn’t lucky last year when you won the league coz you were. Small details decide where the title goes.
we are good and then we are lucky at times yes.
But you’ve had plenty of luck as well. Everton last minute penalty, tottenham home with the goal that was not given to spurs, chelsea at home with the red card to Mikkel that wasn’t.,
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
and the dodgydive penalty against Derby!!!
Jon - January 7th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
cemos, valid points and don’t disagree.
My view was that I think UTD’s pedigree (experience)
will see us through to the title. That’s my viewpoint from what I have seen in in the first half of the season.
marzipants, you back from the cemetery already? I’m surprised you pulled yourself away that quickly.
Peter Marinello - January 7th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I have to say we haven’t been entirely convincing over the last few weeks (touch lucky against the yids) . Despite results going our way we seem to have stuttered somewhat. Hopefully this will be our rough patch and we can now get back to winning comfortably.
I think most of our early season results were born out of youth and better conditioning in pre season as most teams were fucked after 75 mins. Now they have a few months behind them teams are able to challenge for 90 mins.
All the time we have Eboue in the team we give tossers like Jon the ammo to have a go at us. The guy seriously gets on my tits with all his rolling around and I would love Theo to be given a crack.
Goonerbeall - January 7th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Come on guys, why waste all day withj a Manure Tw.. with suspect grammar?
He is living in the past, he is living in the past.
Marzipan Mynci - January 7th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Didn’t pull myself away Jon, I pulled myself off….. been splattering the gravestones and Peter Marinello you’re right - I’d like to see young Theo being given a crack.
neutral - January 7th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
you know what jon?? you know what luck is!?? luck or bad luck is if you concede a goal, which should have not been scored for instance because of an offside, or if you score a goal and it doesn’t count because of an offside which really isn’t there.. if a team has 300 chances and don’t score a single goal and the opposition has 1 chance and scores, than it has nothing to do with bad luck, you just aren’t good enough. and by the way, how many points do you have? 48 right.. and arsenal? 50 right.. og and by the way again! Man U 0 - 2 Coventry !
ArsenalFanInBuffaloNY - January 7th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Jon,
The idea that Arsenal wins with Luck is absolutely ridiculous. We have the same amount of games won by 1 goal (7). Within the last 14 minutes we have (17) goals compared to (9) goals. That shows you two things, either we have the physical stamina to out last a team or that we have the determintaion to stick out the full 90 minutes and grab a late winner. As was shown on Saturday, November 3, 2007.
Is it luck that Arsenal has had (156) shots on goal and scored (42) goals, while ManU had (187) shots on goal and scored only (37) goals? I believe i call that skill.
Drew Vader - January 7th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
good God you all are like little girls…..
whoever wins the title, and the champions league for that matter, will be the beneficiary of large doses of luck. the record books wont have an asteriks next to the name of the champion that says “lucky bastards”, it will just say CHAMPIONS.
United have been playing poorly the last few weeks and have gotten lucky, for example lucky that Piennar is a fucking idiot and doesnt know how to tackle properly. Occasionally the luck isnt there and Ronaldo misses a penalty against WetHam. I just hope at the end of the year United have been on the end of more luck than Arse so i can dance and get drunk whilst celebrating another trophy. who gives a damn about luck
Med - January 8th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Luck is the residue of design. talk more of arsenals sense of football!
