The Daily Mail is reporting in the slightly snide way that only it can, that Aston Villa are in hot pursuit of Spurs striker Jermain Defoe, an unnamed Mail journo confirms:
“The unsettled Defoe, who has been told by Spurs coach Juande Ramos that he is prepared to let him leave White Hart Lane, is reported to have spoken with O’Neill at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground on Wednesday, according to the Birmingham Post.”
This looks to be a good move for both clubs, Ramos can ship out a player he clearly doesn’t rate and gate some transfer dosh into the bargain, and Martin O’Neill can add another layer to his striking options. However an inside source says that coming up with a mutually agreeable fee may prove to be a bit of a problem:
“Jermain has been to talk to Villa. The problem now is negotiating a fee and that may prove to be the sticking point.”
And with Tottenham rumoured to be asking for £10million for Defoe, how high will O’Neill be prepared to go?
