Can West Ham United steal an unlikely and improbable fourth spot in the English Premier League this season and with it a chance to play in the UEFA Champions League next season? Okay, you need not crackle your heads over this but the Hammers midfielder Freddie Ljungberg is confident that they can do just that.
Goal.com quotes the Swedish as telling The Sun:
I looked at the Premier League table before the weekend and we were only seven points off fourth place with a game in hand over every club above us — apart from Liverpool, and we play them in our next home game. I felt we were capable of closing the gap and getting into the fight for fourth place and I still think that is possible even though the gap has opened up a bit more now. A couple of wins can really get you moving in the right direction and it is very tight behind the top three.
You know what? At first, it does seem ludicrous that last season’s relegation battlers could qualify for Europe’s top-tier club competition but there is a mathematical possibility that West Ham might try and go for it. The Hammer might be 10th in the league but they are 9 points off the fourth spot with a game in hand. Having said that, well, it doesn’t feel quite sane. Better bet on Liverpool for that fourth spot.
