Arsene Wenger’s failed endeavour to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Once again Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has let the cats out of the bag. Last month he confessed in having attempted to sign David Beckham from Real Madrid in the summer of 2004 and now he admits the chance of signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon earlier than Manchester United signed him.

Goal.com quotes the Frenchman telling the BBC that he did indeed try and sign the Portuguese winger when he was a teenager. But he failed in the coup because of the ties between Man United and Sporting.

Wenger told the BBC:

He was here much earlier – he could tell you that if he wants. Manchester United had a partnership with Sporting Lisbon when United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz moved and that made it very difficult.

Is it true? In all probabilities yes but I am eagerly waiting the responses of Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Ronaldo.
