Manchester United manager backs Beckham omission

While many have voiced their disappointment that David Beckham won’t be earning his 100th cap against Switzerland next month, the Daily Telegraph report that his former club manager believes that Fabio Capello made the correct decision when omitting the LA Galaxy star. Sir Alex Ferguson sides with the Italian on the matter, refusing to let sentiment get in the way.

“I am not surprised he has been left out. What Fabio has said is that David is not match fit,” he said. “He wants players who are match fit and David has not played any football. That is the reason he has not been picked. It is straightforward.”

The relationship between Ferguson and Beckham grew increasingly frosty towards the end of the latter’s playing career at Old Trafford. This included an incident after defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup where the Scot allegedly kicked a football boot towards his number seven, causing a nasty facial injury which marked the beginning of the end as far as Beckham’s time with United was concerned.
