Joey Barton: Should he play or shouldn’t he?

We all know that rightly or wrongly footballers, especially those playing their trade in the top flight, are a privileged lot. But are they above the law and should they be given more lease and space?

The Daily Telegraph says no. It suggests that Newcastle United’s naughty midfielder Joey Barton shouldn’t be allowed to play any football until he clears his name of the three assault charges that has been lingering on him for quite some time now. Of course, the Geordies are doing all they can to convince the court to allow the England midfielder to play but the British newspaper says that it wouldn’t be fair on other professions should Barton be allowed to play before a final decision on the charges against him have been made.

So should Barton be allowed to play even though he is out of jail only on bail? Many would say yes but so that he is allowed to play football, wouldn’t it exhibit that footballers are a superior class and that they can get away with any crime that they commit?
