The Middlesbrough Evening Gazette are in buoyant spirits, thanks to the signing of £12.7 million Afonso Alves from Dutch club Heerenveen. The paper reports that the striker will enjoy a welcome akin to the one received by Juninho when he arrived at the Riverside Stadium, including Brazilian dancing girls and a samba band.
Alves seems to be looking forward to the relegation fight that lies ahead.
Alves spoke to the Evening Gazette exclusively today, saying: “I’m very excited to be here. Middlesbrough is a good team. I have the option of training this week and hopefully I will be chosen to play on Saturday.
“I haven’t set myself a goal target I just want to achieve something good for the whole team.”
It’s likely that Boro’s latest acquisition will feature during their six-pointer against Fulham this Saturday, with a victory taking Gareth Southgate’s men further away from trouble and into the relative safety of mid-table. Will Alves be sure-fire hit or will we only see his true ability next season when he has acclimatised to the Premier League?
