The official Liverpool website have reported that Fernando Torres is definitely out of Sunday’s match against Chelsea. The Spanish striker picked up a hamstring injury early into a midweek match against France, while long-distance-traveller Javier Mascherano could also miss the match at Stamford Bridge.
Benitez said: “We have lost Torres and Mascherano is not back until tomorrow. I don’t think it (the international friendly situation) is fair. I think Mascherano will be okay for Sunday but we will have to see.
“The news we have on Torres is that it is a hamstring injury. I need to talk to the doctor but I think he will miss this game. Normally it is a week when a player goes off like this.
“It is a big problem for us.”
Rafael Benitez is the second high-profile manager to lament the timing of the international friendlies. Arsene Wenger has also voiced his displeasure at seeing Mathieu Flamini pick up a knock for France B this week. It’s been a few seasons since Liverpool last won at Stamford Bridge in the league and the chances of victory continue to grow slimmer by the day.
