Every time the African Nations Cup comes around, there always seems to be a Premier League player who initially fails to report back for training after their team are eliminated from the competition. In 2008, it’s Everton’s Yakubu grabbing the headlines in the Daily Telegraph for doing this – it looks like he’ll have some explaining to do with David Moyes.
Everton manager David Moyes is considering the future of £11.25 million club record signing Yakubu and preparing to fine the player two weeks’ wages (£80,000) following his failure to return from Africa Cup of Nations duty with Nigeria.
The former Middlesbrough forward and his team-mate, Joseph Yobo, had been set a deadline of Wednesday to return to Merseyside following Nigeria’s elimination in a 2-1 defeat by host nation Ghana on Sunday.
But while Yobo returned on time, Everton have had no contact with Yakubu and Moyes is understood to be ‘seething’ at the player’s failure to make contact with club officials.
So where is the stocky striker? Has he stayed in Ghana to watch the rest of the competition? Has he fallen asleep at the airport Benjani-style and failed to make his connection to Liverpool? And just when will he turn up at Goodison Park?!
