Moyes to unleash Yak on Brann, but will he take a punt on Andy Van Der Meyde?

February 13, 2008

Unsurprisingly David Moyes will bring Yakubu back from exile for this week’s UEFA Cup tie against Norwegian outfit SK Brann. The Moyesiah said:

“Yak’s back in and it’s done with now — that episode has ended.

“Let’s hope he feels he has a point to prove because he let us down by not coming back on time.

“We have moved on but he will be important because he is one of those with good European experience which will be vital.”

So it looks like Yakubu will be playing, but what of the injury ravaged midfield, with Arteta, Gravesen, Pienaar, and possibly Manuel Fernandes crocked? Moyes confessed that his team will be severely depleted:

“To be honest it’s a bit of a struggle even getting a team out.

“We would hope that the boys who have been through it all before in Europe are a real help to us, because we’ll need it with the injuries.”

A look at the squad members that flew over to Norway shows us that a certain Mr Van Der Meyde, international man of mystery, and once upon a time a blahhrdy good winger, any chance of a double recall of Yakubu and Van Der Meyde?

I knew we’d regret letting McFadden go

Gross bad luck to end up with Arteta, Pinear, Graveson (what a waste of space he’s turned out to be) all crocked and with Fernandes only half fit. But things like this do happen and it was always gonna be risky running such a small squad with such limited cover. There is also a touch of poor management about letting McFadden go whilst then having to fall back on van de Meyde - moment of truth for the Dutchman to either shape up or ship out once and for all, and all the more so if Moyes doesn’t use him at any stage. Not at all as confident as I think we could/should be as Brann are an unknown quantity, even to Moyes and his staff (poor preparation?) Just hope we get through this match with the minimum of damage to our prospects of progressing further for when our big guns are back.

I hope AVDM Turns in a decent performance if picked….for a while he had kept his head down and trained hard. He was unlucky wwith his shin injury, but if he can perform then it will be like a new player. CMON SON. Lets get behind him.
