Franz Beckenbauer warns Premier League

Posted by

German legend Franz Beckenbauer knows a thing or two about lauching World Cup bids and actually hosting the mega competition. After all, he was the architect of the organization of the World Cup in 2006.

And the English FA might well do themselves a favour by listening to him. Kaiser says that the proposed plans of the Premier League to play an international round of Premiership matches from 2010-11 could dampen England’s hopes to host the World Cup in 2018.

Beckenbauer says:

If Fifa is against this idea to put Premier League games outside the country, I wouldn’t do it. The decision on who gets the World Cup 2018 will happen very soon and England are one of the favourites. At this time I wouldn’t be so cocky as to go against Fifa. In this period if you want to be the World Cup hosts you have to get hand-in-hand with Fifa, otherwise you don’t get the chance.

Mr. Richard Scudamore, are you listening? Now this is a club-versus-country row in a different frame? Go ahead with the plans, fatten the club’s bank accounts and gift a kick in the teeth of England, or, let the whole thing pass and give your nation a chance.
