Bolton Wanderers have constrcuted the shock of the UEFA Cup so far this season. Gary Megson’s workman-like team were never going to play pretty football at the Vicente Calderon where they took on Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the last 32 tie in the UEFA Cup but they did show steel and determination as they shut out Atletico from scoring and held onto their slender 1-0 lead from the first leg.
Bolton manager Gary Megson said after the match:
It’s a good night for us. In terms of passing and creative football, we didn’t play as well as I know we can, but in terms of heart and desire, enthusiasm and work-rate, we were marvellous.
That is no surprise for me because we have always been like that ever since I’ve been at the football club. We didn’t set out purposely to defend, we got pushed back by a very good team.
Now this is really turning ridiculously entertaining. Bolton are fighting for the survival in the Premiership whereas Atletico are gunning for a top four finish in La Liga. Then how come Bolton dump them out of the UEFA Cup!? In football, logic rarely holds supreme and Bolton proved that on Thursday night at the Calderon.
