Rafa Benitez to compromise his rotation policy
February 27, 2008
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is renowned for his extremely controversial in-game rotation policy. Whilst being extremely equable in terms of theory, in practice it is almost illogical as it is the fans and, in this case, the owners, who become annoyed and frustrated at seeing Steven Gerrard on the bench.
Rafa Benitez said in response to the interrogation:
“I think so. It will depend on the players in the end, but we can keep some players playing more games now,” said Benitez, speaking shortly after Everton’s 2-0 victory away to Manchester City seriously upped the pressure on his side in the race for the final Champions League place,
“Everton have a lot of confidence right now and it was a good win for them (on Monday), but it’s a long race,” the Spaniard added.
“Portsmouth, Villa, Everton, City and us will all be there. I’m not sure if it will go to the final game but I think a lot will depend on these three games we have in a row.”
Should Rafa compromise? Or should he (stubbornly) stick to his game and spite the critics of his tactics? Will his own ego prevail over what is best for the underachieving Liverpool? The title is long gone for Liverpool, but is Rafa’s rotation policy worth the risk of a Champion’s League position? One would think not.

Got something to say?

“should rafa compromise” - I’m afraid it matters not now, its too late. Thanks to Rafas stubborness we lost too many points at the start of the season due to rotation. Rotation that was supposed to keep players fresh for the end of season run in. I beleive their is nothing wrong with rotation as such, as long as you have 22 quality players than can be rotated in and out. However our problem at liverpool is that we just dont have that many quality players, we can barely put out 11
As I stand looking at this shambles of a season on the Reds’ hands, I think enough is enough and someone needs to sit Rafa down and explain: “Use the players’ FORM first, fitness second.” We don’t need to start rotating the first 2 months of the season. There is no other team that does this to this extreme. Of course you need to rest players, and yes, it did work for Rafa at Valencia, but it is obvious that A) Liverpool aren’t deep enough in certain positions and B) Certain players are “untouchables” (uggh, i just quoted mourinho. I feel dirty).
As much as I dislike Mr. Jose, he had a point. Gerrard, Carra and Torres are for sure in this category, and Agger is well on his way, especially considering Hyypia is losing/has lost his edge.
However, I don’t want to see Rafa completely desert the rotation policy, once again for a couple reasons. Chiefly, it has served us well down the stretch in past seasons; I believe it is a big reason we always go far in the CL. Additionally, with an established rotation policy, every player is given a chance to play. This, in the long term, helps keep the squad healthy and in good spirits.
Finally, when the hell is Rafa going to realize that Crouch IS a viable striking option, and the one that opens Stevie G up the most!?!?! You may not like his style, you can be jealous of his breakdancing ability, but you can’t tell me that he doesn’t change the way a team has to defend and our attacking options. Want to shake things up Rafa? Bench Kuyt for a couple games and teach him to dribble and pass…would help things if you really think he and Nino are your “first-choice” team
he should be sacked.
“Rotation” is Rafa’s religion. So he will rotate the players who are fit in his 1st 11.
By now the players know they will play or not play in the next match. They need to be ready all the time. As I have said before, Rafa needs to pair up the departments : Crouch/Torres ; Kuyt/Babel ; Mache/Gerrard ; Alonso/Lucas; Yossi/Areabola on left ; Finnan/Pennant on right.
The understanding will grow better when they play together all the time even alternate games.
