Football365 reports that Everton have applied for the Intertoto Cup in order to keep all options open for a backdoor entry to the UEFA Cup next season. The Merseysiders are fourth in the table and are virtually guaranteed to play in the top six of the Premiership table at the end of the table but Everton chief executive Keith Wyness says that the Intertoto is just a precautionary measure.
Clearly European qualification through our league position or via the UEFA Cup is our main priority.
However because of the deadline for Intertoto Cup applications, it would be remiss of us not to put our name forward.
So is this actually a lack of confidence? Aston Villa also applied for the Intertoto Cup earlier this month and they too are in a healthy position to qualify for the UEFA Cup next season. Somehow you have to laugh at this stance of Everton to go and apply for the Intertoto. After all, they are fighting for a UEFA Champions League berth and they need to exhibit some confidence!
