Liverpool line up another young star

February 28, 2008

If Scott Carson can’t even get a game at Anfield, what’s the point in them buying another goalkeeper called Scott?

Rafa Benitez is apparently looking to the future and attempting to beat a host of clubs to the signature of Watford’s up-and-coming goalkeeper Scott Loach (various).

But Liverpool face stiff competition from Newcastle for the 19-year-old who is currently on loan to League Two side Bradford, making him the youngest first-team keeper in the country.

Stuart Pearce is also said to be interested in calling him up for the England Under-21 squad.

Liverpool obviously have a history of great goalkeepers and in Pepe Reina they have a sound first-choice stopper. Obviously, things didn’t work at Anfield for Chris Kirkland, who was similarly impressive at a young age,

Scott Carson – on loan at Aston Villa – looks set to leave Merseyside also. One thing is for sure, Anfield reserve keeper Charles Itandje hasn’t impressed many with his uncertain displays. Clearly one for the future, Loach would be a good addition to the growing crop of young stars being accumulated by Benitez.

There’s a very good reason for Liverpool, or indeed any club, to acquire spare players - and that’s the current loan system.

When a club like Liverpool has two goalkeepers on loan and occupying first choice at a premiership club that’s four games where Liverpool can bank on the opposition defence playing in front of an irregular, even completely inexperienced goalkeeper.

To see how decisive such loans can be in the destiny of silverware look back to April last year when we saw the most destructive aspect of the loan system when Everton couldn’t play Tim Howard against Manchester United in a crucial game that helped decide the future of the league title. What made it so reprehensible was that Howard was by then actually an Everton player - not even on loan any more. But because of some an exemption clause that only kicked in if the title hadn’t already been decided, Howard was ruled out. The rookie filling his gloves made a decisive error and Man U came back from 2-0 down to win 4-2.

How the Premier League continue to allow this to happen is beyond me.

Once the loan system in its present form is abolished not only will the undue inflcuence of the big four be significantly diminished - and I write as a Liverpool fan - but player prices will come down as they reduce their squads of players bought only in the knowledge that they can be loaned out to the owner clubs advantage.

Dont agree with LFC buying all these keepers. What is the point? Reina is only 24ish and has about 14 years ahead of him, so unless one day he becomes rubbish which he wont, then we really shouldnt buy anyone else in this position. David Martin can play in the cups next year and become our number two. The only thing i will say is that it makes business sense. We bought Carson for 1million and now selling him for £10million to Villa. There is no way we have paid him £9million in wages since the move so its a handy profit.

Saying this, we seem to have bought loads of youngsters and yet only about 3/4 are any good. I think Insua will be first choice left back next season, Arbeloa will be our right back. In defence we have carragher, skrytel and agger. In midfield we still need two wingers, one on each side with Kewell and Pennant being able replacements as well as Benayoun. IN centre midfield we have Jay Spearing coming through and the very impressive Damien Plessis so along with Gerrard, mascherano and Alonso, we dont need anyone in that area. Up front is the real problem. We have Torres but whilst we have Crouch, we will continue to pump long balls forward. Nemeth and Brouwer, as well as David Amoo look to be good prospects but we still need a world class striker. Kuyt works hard and Voronin is international standard but he isnt very good.

karim, i think you are right on many points - you missed Lucas who is looking better with every game but i disagree with you about Brouwer - I’ve seen him 3 times, once live and twice on highlights and he doesn’t look up to much. Nemeth on the other hand looks a great prospect along with Plessis and Insua. Also, Crouch provides a different threat to any of the other strikers (of the others only Torres really is threatening) and it’s not his fault if the others “pump long balls forward”. Although Kuyt is a real battler, he ain’t no striker, and I wish Rafa had shown more faith in the Torres/Crouch partnership. Itandje was bloody awful against Barnsley.
