Spurs are handing Ramos £40m? Who would you buy?
by CaughtOffside Team on February 29th, 2008We have all heard the conjecture about the masses of money available to Juande Ramos now that he appears to be moving Tottenham in the right direction.
Now here’s your chance to spend the millions as you think the boss should. You could fill a telephone directory with the names linked with a move to White Hart Lane, a great deal of them from Spain (seemingly because of Ramos’s former management and connections there) and some already plying their trade in the Premier League. Various rags reported that Spurs have handed 40 million to Ramos to spend this summer, although that figure is almost certainly just made up based on previous spending, but who cares.
Here are a sample of some of the names already floating around. Daniel Alves, Diego Milito, Stewart Downing, Johann Elmander, Morten Gamst Pedersen, Hatem Ben Arfa, Karim Benzema, Freddi Kanoute and Deco. That’s just for starters.
But enough of the speculation. Who would YOU buy with the reported £40m war chest?

have been a spurs supporter for fifty years not happy with robinson this year
cannot catch anything not even a cold still need two central defenders to cover for
walking wounded ledley king and woodgate world class central midfield player
left sided winger world class if possible and a quality striker to replace defoe
as for names i leave that to the experts but ronaldo and rooney would be nice haha
Anonymous - February 29th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

and villa would cost more like 25-30 mil
id buy:
diego 15mil

and a cb

To be honest, as backup I don’t think there is anything wrong with Dawson and Kaboul. I think the majority of Premier league teams would have either as starters so no worries there in my mind. I agree we need a keeper, but I think we can do better than Kameni. Would love Diego, but I believe the need for a defensive midfielder and a Left winger is more pressing. I don’t know what the best names would be, I think I’d rather leave that to ‘The Management’ but I would choose to strengthen with:
A Goalkeeper (experienced but with years left in him)
A Defensive Midfielder (again experienced, but someone we can mould to the system Ramos likes to play)
A Left Winger (Malbranque has done a good job, but an orthodox winger would be good. I don’t like Downing, I want someone with some pace and plenty of tricks. That Diego Capel would be a cracking choice I think).
fuzzyid - February 29th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Sell:
Rocha, YP Lee, Stalteri, Gardner.
Buy:
Marco Amelia
Jarque
Diego Capel
Van Der Vaart.
I dont see the point in buying another forward unless one goes, in which case Villa is the natural person to wish for. We just need to bolster our defensive back up in the centre so we are always guarenteed to have at least 1 experienced player holding the line. We need that left winger and it would be nice to have a world class CAM to challenge Jenas.
Cwoff - February 29th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I just read that Bent is the 19th highest paid player in the world! That’s above King, Keane and Berbatov. So…
Sell:
Bent for 8m
Buy:
Capel 9m
Gudjohnsen 5m
Adam Johnson 5m
Craig Gordon 10m
Put the rest towards adding another tier and 15,000 more seats to WHL.
tk one - February 29th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
10m for Kameni? His clause is for around 10m euors so 5m should suffice.
8m would cover Diego Capel who without a doubt would light up the prem. If not i’m sure we could get Royston Drenthe on loan from real with a view to a perm switch. thats the LM sorted.
10-15m would cover Sergio Aquero, he plays for Athletico Madrid is still young but has awesome talent, selling bent would cover this transfer breaking roughly even. He has my vote for a striker with bags of speed to go with the a cool finish.
8m for Dani Jarque seems to be the most constant rumour for a very good but not world class CB.
That just leaves a decent attacking mid not sure yet as to who as there are many to choose from but not many that would fit in with our style of play
JK3000 - February 29th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Capel or Ben Arfa for LW 8-15m
Kameni or Amelia GK 4-8m
Kevin Davies, Kevin Doyle, Dave Kitson or David Nugent for another option up front - any of those would provide a very useful and different 4th option, ranging between 5 and 8m
Chimbonda out 4-6m
Boateng out 3-5m
Rocha out 1-2m
Keep Berba at all costs and see if Cerny is happy to stay as back up.
I reckon with those comings and goings at the worst we’d have an net outlay of 25m.
And the squad would have 3 good players for each position
JK3000 - February 29th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Also sell Gardner and Stalteri, 1-3m total for both. Keep YP Lee and Benny A-E if they are happy as 3rd choice.
GK: Kameni/Amelia, Cerny, Alnwick
RB: Hutton, Gunter, YP Lee
LB: Bale, Gilberto, Assou-Ekotto
CB: King, Woodgate, Dawson, Kaboul, Huddlestone
RM: Lennon, Taarabt, Malbranque
LM: Ben Arfa/Capel, Rose, Malbranque
CM: Jenas, Huddlestone, Tainio, Zokora, Malbranque, O’Hara
ST: Berba, Keane, Bent, Davies or alternative, Dixon
JK3000 - February 29th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Finally…
We could also sell Assou Ekotto and YP Lee and just use Tainio and O’Hara as extra full backs if need be, probably better that way.
If we wanted to use that extra 15-20m, we could splash it all on 1 spectacular CM
yido88 - February 29th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
ok… ins;
we need a goalkeeper, whether that be short or long term, i wouldnt mind seeing cudicini if we cant land someone world class, wouldnt cost more than 4 million, maybe half that. ideally though, the livorno goalkeeper would be perfect, you can’t be number two for the country who produce arguably the best goalkeepers in the world if your not very good.
defensive midfielder, this is a must too. who? maybe not that realistic but for a long, long shot, yaya toure, unsettled at barcelona, would settle quite quickly with the help of his scummy brother? most realistic though is probally poulsen, woudlnt be dissapointed at all with that.
left midfield, definitly capel, no doubt at all, not unless we could attract world class, but for the price, age, potential, capel has got to be top up there. dont forget we have taarabt who will probally break through next season too.
last but not least a foward to replace the misfiring bent… dean ashton? seems unhappy at the moment?
yido88 - February 29th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
10-15m for aguero? are you mad? they paid more than that for him and he along with messi are argentinas future…. very far fetched lol.
whb - February 29th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
What about Boruc for a keeper?
And I just don’t see any confidence (from Ramos) in Bent. He’ll probably go and one of those strikers on the continent will be brought in.
Ramos needs to find a front three which he can rotate and not feel like he’s gambling.
Sofa King - February 29th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
One buy: Christian Poulsen - the boy’s solid.
Huh?
Declan - February 29th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Yiddo 4eva - February 29th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
i would love to see diego capel at white hart lane the boy has potential and offers us a natural left sided midfielder. we aint going to be getting ben arfa no way. i think we will be signing jarque in the summer and we also need a gd goalkeeper. i would love to see us also get diego from werder bremen he is a quality player but i think it is unlikely as he once rejected us before choosing 2 go porto. what does everyone else think?
Eujen - February 29th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
villa, aguero, and diego are all 20mil + players.
All of them will want to be playing in Champions League football or at least UEFA Cup for Aguero.
Futbol - March 1st, 2008 at 2:02 am
villa very super footballa player..
Jordan - March 1st, 2008 at 5:53 am
you would be mad to spend it all.
Buy a player, or two, and use the rest for wage negotiations or PR.
Sofa King - March 2nd, 2008 at 1:38 am
Jordan; there’s already money set aside for those other things.
These figures have been meticulously calculated (well, calculated anyway) - and that’s the transfer budget that they can afford to spend.
And PR? What the fuck?
iceycalm - March 2nd, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Bring back Clemence, Mabbutt and Lineker too !!!
dan - March 2nd, 2008 at 6:46 pm
i think someone like Boruc for goalie and keep Robbo aswell let them battle it out. we need a creative midfielder with a touch of magic, thats sadly lacking in zok, steed, jj and tommy. We should set 20 mil aside for a quality asset there, Diego of Bremen, Arteta of Everton eg
dan - March 2nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm
also do everything to keep berba, villa would be a great addition but not a replacement 4berba as is too small and would not be enough of a precence drop keano slightly deeper and have villa n berba right up there, ahh to dream
Sofa King - March 2nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Owen to replace Berbatov! (if he goes)
ben - June 3rd, 2008 at 6:21 pm
