He may be known to many as ‘The Professor’, yet Martin O’Neill is not very impressed by Arsene Wenger’s head for numbers. The Arsenal manager complained after his team’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa that his team were the most fouled in the Premier League this season, although the Daily Mirror suggests otherwise!
“While Arsenal are a very good side they can’t just corner the market on being the only side that has to resist a challenge. They put in a few challenges themselves.
“William Gallas, also. If you are asking do I agree with Arsene Wenger, absolutely not. But there’s nothing new about that.
“He said Arsenal were the most fouled team and they were this, this and this.
“Then a stat came along and said they were the 12th most fouled team, then another stat had Manchester United as the most fouled team. He’s a brilliant manager, he’s a bad mathematician.”
Perhaps Wenger is still sensitive on the issue of strong tackling after the Eduardo incident at St Andrews. However, football is a contact sport and if you dish it out, you have to be prepared to take it. It had appeared that the Gunners were no longer proving to have a soft underbelly although could they be feeling the pressure of a long hard season?
