Everton manager David Moyes is frank enough to admit that his side faces an uphill battle to thread its way to the last 8 of the UEFA Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina in Florence in the UEFA Cup, last 16, first leg tie on Thursday night.
It was arguably the Merseysider’s worst performance of the season and Moyes admits that:
We’ve got a mountain to climb now. The best team won and the performance was not good, although Fiorentina did play really well.
We did not start particularly well and that gave the initiative to them.
It’s going to be a big job now for us — certainly on this performance it will be very difficult.
We will have to do much, much better and Fiorentina were very strong in all departments.
Some of the players didn’t play to their potential, that’s for sure. In fact the majority did not.
We did not get up to the pace of the game at any time and both goals could have been avoided.
It was very disappointing.
Prior to the match, Moyes was saying that Everton can win the UEFA Cup this season and now they might not even reach the last 8. There you have it, a classic case of counting the chickens before they hatch.
