Bolton Wanderers’ UEFA Cup run might just have come to an end here. Gary Megson’s side were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in spite of taking the lead.
Yet manager Megson remains confident that they can dig themselves out of the hole and can qualify for the last 8. He insists that Bolton retain the capability of scoring in Lisbon in the away leg of this last 16 tie.
I thought we really dominated the game. They didn’t create many chances, although their goal was an exceptional strike.
The fact we didn’t win was disappointing but the way we performed certainly wasn’t disapponting, especially against a great team.
We went to Bayern Munich and scored twice, we went to Red Star Belgrade and scored, and although we didn’t score at Atletico Madrid, we didn’t need to.
We now know that we have to score and we’re perfectly capable of going over there and doing that.
Yet it is hard to see how Bolton can score in Lisbon. Sporting are a fantastic side with players of far better quality than Bolton. Their goal at the Reebok Stadium on Thursday night certainly makes them the favourites to go through to the quarter-finals from this tie.
