Now this is something really sensible. Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies says that beating Sporting Lisbon in the away leg of their UEFA Cup last 16 tie is nowhere as important as winning the proverbial 6-pointer against fellow relegation candidates Wigan Athletic in the Premiership three days later.
Bolton travel to Lisbon next week with a 1-1 draw from the home leg but for Davies and his manager Gary Megson, the Premiership is more important. Davies says:
I could understand it if he left me out at Lisbon.
We’d all love to be involved — but the bigger picture for us is Wigan.
Our position in the Premier League is not good and that’s why the Wigan game is so vital for us. It will be huge.
This decision would indeed be a very, very sensible one since Bolton cannot even remotely aspire to win the UEFA Cup but with more concentration they might just be able to sustain their Premiership status for next season at least.
