Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez today claimed that he was pretty chuffed with himself for turning down the chance to bring little Mickey Owen back to Anfield and plumping for the mercurial Spanish goal machine Fernando Torres instead. Rafa spoke about the shortlist of striker that he had drawn up, and that although Owen was considered as an option, Torres was the name that came out on top. The Liverpool gaffer said:
“We were looking for a player with pace and power.
“We had a list of 10 strikers which we then brought down to two or three priorities.
“The first option was Torres because he was young.
“But Owen was one of those on the list we had, he was one of the names.
“There were a lot of things to consider — the age and other conditions.
“The senior players here talked really well about Michael but in the end Torres was our decision. I am really happy with Torres although I know that Michael is also a very good finisher.”
Is Rafa saying this just to bait weekend opponents Newcastle United?
