While the rest of the world goes gaga over Steven Gerrard, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez prefers to pay mum and more often than not points out the flaws and shortcoming in his skipper’s game.
Yet after Liverpool’s 3-0 routing of Newcastle United at Anfield in the Premiership on Saturday, even Rafa couldn’t eclipse his admiration of Stevie G and has actually praised him! Now that’s a collector’s item.
With the quality he has, and with the freedom the role gives him, he is almost unstoppable. He enjoys playing in this position, he enjoys the freedom, and he enjoys playing with Torres.
He knows that he will find Torres and they enjoy playing together because they are both quality players.
He still has responsibility in the midfield and he knows he must work, but he knows he doesn’t have to work back 40 or 50 yards when we lose the ball. Now it is 10 or 20, and that brings the best out of him.
Steven Gerrard must be over the moon after being praised by Rafa Benitez. But there’s little doubt that Rafa will creep back into his old no-praise self once again soon.
